Cut a spring bouquet.
"Making cut flowers look
good for the longest possible
time is a challenge faced by
many home gardeners," said
Mrs. Ida A. Perez, Extension
county home demonstration a-
gent. "Learn a few basic tips
to give longer life to cut flow-
ers whether home grown or
from your local florist."
Wash the container with soap
and water before using.
Remember to cut stems at a
slant, using a sharp knife or
shears.
Cut flowers in the early
morning or late afternoon. Be-
fore cutting, select flowers that
aren't fully open, and avoid cut-
ting old flowers.
'•Don't forget to remove the
foliage from the lower third of
the stem and all broken and
bruised parts of the stem," the
agent advised. "Then wash the
flowers to remove dirt, sprays
and dusts."
Store cut flowers in a cool
area or refrigerate until you're
ready to arrange them.
The agent suggested that on
receiving bulk flowers from the
florist, you should recut the
ends of the stems about one
inch.
"Don't place the arrangement
in direct sun, near gas fires or
oil burners," Mrs. Ida A Perez
warned. "Whenever possible
place them in a cool area dur-
ing the night but not where drafts
occur."
RecuttMig stems of flowers
and changing the water gives
longer lif<\to cut flowers. This'
should be u#ne every other day
for most spe ies.
Consumer protection is in Its
heyday! And consumers can
help their cause by being cau-
tious of quack products that
offer miracle cures of plant
diseases and other maladies.
Although difficult, it's im-
portant that consumers be able
to weed out products that do not
meet all the advertised claims,
contends Dr. Wendell Home,
plant pathologist with the Texas
Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice. He advocates being suspi-
cious of the following advertis-
ing approaches:
1. Manufacturer or promoter
claims that the product will
cure all difficulties associated
with plants.
2. Claims are made that are
not shown and supported in the
product's label.
3. The product Is so new and
revolutionary that research
agencies have not tested it.
4. Active ingredients of the
product are not shown. If this
is the case, it probably has none.
5. Promotion is supported
only by testimonials, with no
research-backed data.
C. Overselling techniques are
used to compensate for the lack
of performance Information.
"Few people who buy quack
products ever complain because
they want to avoid ridicule from
their friends and neighbors for
having been taken by such a
scheme," notes Home. "Un-
fortunately, promoters prey
upon the consumer's attribute
of hope and faith that miracles
do happen."
Consumer protection and
regulatory agencies are doing
much to curb quack products,
but they can perform only with-
in the framework of their re-
sources and supportive legisla-
tion, explains the plant patholo-
gist. Each consumer must do
his share by refusing to buy
unproved products and by ac-
tively supporting regulatory
activities that offer consumer
protection.
"When purchasing products
to care for your lawn and gar-
den plants ask your nursery-
man or garden store operator
for official recommendations
that are based on research and
are kept current each year.
Such information is provided by
the Extension Service and is
available at any county Exten-
sion office," adds Home.

WHY I WANT
YOUR von
1 am again offering my services to you, the public. I have
served you for 12 years and have gained much knowledge
and experience through many turbulent years on the school
board. I have been asked why I am seeking re-election? Well,
looking at my fellow board-members, they are all new and
have little experience, I feel I have much more to offer for
the welfare of our schooldistrict and the future education
of your children. For the past two years our school district
has taken a big step backwards instead of forward. And up
to this time some of my fellow board members do not take
the time and interest to learn to upgrade their knowledge
where the school and education is concerned. I have done
this over the years and keep on doing it so I am in a better
position to serve vou.
As you know, looking at my record, I have always been
your servant. My prime interest has always been the edu-
cational welfare of your children. I have no selfish interest-
-I am not associated with any political party. I feel that
lack of political ties is the only way to serve all the people.
As you all could see by the distribution of the handbill given
out more than a week ago at the Science Fair on the school-
grounds a political sheet put out by a political party—
my endorsement is not there, I am the only candidate run-
ning independently. I want to continue my fight to keep the
school free of politics. After all, education should be for the
children; My policy has always been to leave politics to the
politicians and the school to the educators.
I have been part of some good changes during my 12 years
on the board. I was named to the board in August of 1959
to fill the unexpired term of a boardmember. The reason for
this was to have a member serve from the La Casita Grulla
area, since we have schools in those two communities. I
have been re-elected since 1960 every two years.
I was part of the board when it was politically controlled
and the teachers and employee were forced to serve on
election day or be forced out of a job. . It made me sad be-
cause we live in such a great country, the only democratic
country in the world with it's government "By the people,
for the people and of the people." The only country in the
world with "Freedom of speech, freedom of religion free-
dom of the press, freedon of voting "So I was part of
the board to set our people free to vote, I feel this is the
greatest priviledge a citizen can exercise. I believe in prac-
ticing what we preach; We live in a free country and I am
proud that this country has me, because It is the best country
in the world, I feel priviledged to live here and I will do all
I can for my country and community.
I was part of the board when we eliminated the "Dual Sys-
tem" in our school district—when the school superintendent
and the taxcollector earned the same salary, $16,000.00 a
year. There is no comparison between the superintendent
and the tax-collector.
I was also a member of the board that gave continuing con-
tracts to the teachers. Our teachers had need of that kind
of security for many years. I feel the same way about our
administrators— they should have a better security than they
have right now—still very uncertain and hanging in the air,
because the school board 's four members always cancel
the meetings, and I am not part of the four.
I have always been for hiring the best teachers and ad-
ministrators for our district—but I also have fought to trim
our system of personnel that is not needed and hired only
for political reasons. I want better classrooms for our chil-
dren and more materials for our teachers to work with.
At the present time, a teacher only gets $25.00 per year for
teaching supplies because there is a lack of money for that
purpose, when money is allocated for other unimportant
things.
I respect the value of education. We love our children and
what better things are there to give them than a good edu-
cation? Education stays with a child throughout his or her
lifetime and is something that can never be lost. We know that
our children are the future of our country so we should take
pride in giving them the best education available. Children
grow up and have to seek a place in life—the better the edu-
cation, the better life they will make. Let me point out to
you that "Poverty is lack of education." Education is the key
to success! Education is a life-time investment. We all have
children and we love them; therefore, it is only human na-
ture that we want the very best for their future.
I have considered it a great honor to serve you! I have
done my very best to serve you well, because I have always
taken this responsibility very seriously^ My belief is to so-
a job well or not at all, For those of you who want me to
serve, I want ot- be deserving of your choice and I want you
to be proud of what I do on the board; but if elected, I will
serve all the people equally and well—regardless of whether
they voted for me or not. I cannot guarantee any miracles
since I am only human and not perfect. I do not claim to be
perfect. I do not claim to know everything about the schools-
- for I am learning more and more every day. Ask), I am
only one out of seven on the board. Alone, I have no power,
together and sitting in session, the board is the governing
body of the school, and the majority rules.
I have considered it a great honor to serve you! I have
done my very best to serve you well, because I have always
taken this responsibility very seriously, My belief Is to so
a job well or not at all, For those of you who want me to
serve, I want ot be deserving of your choice and I want you
to be proud of what I do on the board, but If elected, I will
serve all the people equally and well--regardless of whether
they voted for me or not. I cannot guarantee any mlraclas
So it Is up to you, the people —the free voters of our school
district—what you want for your children and our commu-
nity! I am again offering my services to you and again with
no selfish interest. My goal is only to serve you, the people-
-and our children.
