Customs seizes weed and firearms
U.S. Border Patrol agents ar-
rested two Houston men Monday
morning on the banks of the Rio
Grande near Rio Grande City
and confiscated 40 pounds of
marijuana, several firearms,
ammunition and $2,000 in cash
as they came under heavy
gunfire from the Mexican side
of the river, according to Cecil
Smalling, senior Border Patrol
Agent in McAllen.
Charged Monday afternoon
before U.S. Magistrate William
Mallet with importing mari-
juana were Thomas Banks Oli-
ver 20, and Arturo Ramirez,
20. No charges have been filed
as yet for possession of
firearms but an official in the
magistrate's office said more
charges are expected to be filed
some time today. Both men are
in Cameron County Jail in lieu
of $10,000 bond each.
Smalling said the arrests
were made after the border
patrol agents observed a mail
back a vehicle up to the river
and open its trunk. A second
man appeared from the river
and dropped a large bundle

tics, activities or community
service in the book. Less than
1.5% of the junior and senior
class students nation-wide are
awarded recognition.
Guerra Is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Jesus Guerra Jr., of Ro-
ma and has received the follow-
ing awards, Sports Illustrated
Magazine Merit Award, Lions
Club Award for Athlete of
the Year, All-Amorican two
years in a row.
Guerra is attending Pan Am-
erican University where he has
received a full four year schol-
arship.

to complete
training
SAN ANTONIO — Airman
Rodolfo Elizondo, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Jesus Elizondo of
203 N. Margo St., Rio Grande
City, has been assigned to Chan-
ute A KB, 111., after completing
Air Force basic training.
During his six weeks at the
Air Training Command's Lack-
land AFB, Tex., he studied the
Air Force mission, organiza-
tion and customs and received
special instruction in human
relations.
The airman has been assigned
to the Technical Training Cen-
ter at Shanute for specialized
training in the aircraft equip-
ment maintenance field.
Airman Elizondo, a 1971 gra-
duate of Rio Grande City High
School, attended Durham's Col-
lege, Harlingen.

Outdoors
CIMARRON, N.M. -- Rev.
James L. Gebhart, 123 Arredon-
do Ave., Rio Grande City, par-
ticipated in one of Scoutings'
most unique learning programs
at Philmont Scout Ranch and Ex-
plorer Base, the "University of
the Great Outdoors."
He was enrolled in the Boy
Scout Unit Commissioner Con-
ference, which is part of a na-
tional training program organ-
ized by the National Council,
Boy Scouts of America.
Gebhart, a minister, serves
as Scoutmaster of Troop 93 in
the Rio Grande Council, BSA,
which coordinates Scouting for
the boys in his area.
The course, taught at the Phil-
mont Training Center in the
foothills of the Sangre de Cris-
to mountains, was one of 28
courses that was offered to
more than 1,000 volunteer Scout

honored
Rev. Agapito Santos, OMI,
pastor of the Immaculate Con-
ception Catholic Church was
honored with a farewell dinner
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Pete Diaz Jr., Father Santos
has been transferred to Kings-
ville where he will serve in the
local Catholic parish. Hosting
the evening were Mr. and Mrs.
E.A. Duran, Mr. and Mrs. Lau-
ro Lopez and Mr. and Mrs.
Pete Diaz Jr. Special guests
for the evening were Padres
Castellano, Barona, Aguierre,
Slattery, Jose and Max. The
three hosts also served a simi-
lar dinner to Father Dan who
is presently assigned to Mid-
land.

five day and night mountain trek
while Rev. Gebhart was in train-
ing during the week of August

ORLANDO, Fla. — Navy Air-
man Recruit H. Rueben Garcia,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Monte R.
Blackwell of Falcon Heights,
graduated from recruit train-
ing at the Naval Training Cen-
ter in Orlando.
Community Advisory Commit-
tee will be organized on Sep-
tember 1, 1972. The following
memorandum has been sent to
all teachers in the Bilingual
Program:
We are planning to organize
our Community Advisory Com-
mittee for the Bilingual Edu-
cation Program next Friday,
September 1, 1972. The Com-
mittee must be composed of
three-fourths parents and one-
fourth school personnel. We
hereby request that the teachers
at different campuses call par-
ents to a meeting and elect
representatives to this Com-
mittee. The members of this
committee will be elected in a
democratic manner at the dif-
ferent campuses.
We are allocating the repre-
sentatives to this Committee
according to school units in
each campus.

Agent Joe Smith pursued the
man into the river and appre-
hended him while his partner,
Barry Dixon, arrested the driv-
er of the vhicle. The agents
came under fire from the Mex-
ican side of the river while
they attempted to retrieve!:re-
arms from a raft at the river's
edge. No one was injured.
Confiscated in addition to the
marijuana and money were two
machine guns, two .30 caliber
rifles and two pistols. The
marijuana and money were
handed over to U.S. Customs
agents and the firearms were
released to the custody of al-
cohol, tobacco and firearms
agents from Brownsville, Smal-
ling said.

and found guilty on the three
counts against him. Sentencing
is set for September 19 await-
ing a presentencing investiga-
tion.
Gonzalez' bond was forfieted
and a new one of $100,000.00
was set by U.S. District Judge
Reynaldo Garza.
