Local schools
observe Earth Day
Earth Day, April 26,1974, was
celebrated throughout the Rio
Grande City Consolidated In-
dependent School District wifh
a variety of activities, ac-
cording to R.C. Salinas Jr.,
Administrative Assistant to the
Superintendent of Schools.
As an example of the ac-
tivities undertaken by each
school the following are given:
Rio Grande City High School
students in the Science
Department made walking
trips to the river and to the
School District junk yard;
Ringgold Junior High students
had a filto festival with
speakers; Ringgold In-
termediate School had a Spring
Arbor Day ceremony planting
two trees in memory of a for-
mer teacher at the school,
Clement L. Shockley Jr.,
Ringgold Primary students
took nature walks to a beautiful
wooded setting below the water
plant and then toured the
facilities of the Starr County
Water Control and Im-
provement District; North
Grammar students of the 3rd
and 4th grades had an al fresco
assembly where Geo. ge Willis
of the US Soil Conservation
Service talked to them about
the films which they had
already viewed in the
classroom. Guerra Elementary
students used their entire
school as a learning laboratory
with a host of classroom ac-
tivities, bulletin boards which
featured the trash input of the
school on a given lunch period,
student feelings & com-
mitments; La Union
Elementary students had a
Spring Clean Up Day in which
the entire school family from
the principal on down pitched in
to give their school a 1st class
clean up. Grulla Junior students
had an Examine your en-
vironment Day in which the
eighth grade students met with
County Judge Mario Ramirez
and Commissioner Hector
Lozano at the entrance to the
city which is marred by the
presence of a junk yard. The
Grulla Junior High eighth
graders through their
spokesman, Alvaro Venecia
and Rosa Nelia Solis, expressed
their concern to their county
officials.
On behalf of the County
Administration Judge Mario
Ramirez expressed his concern
about the situation touching
briefly upon the possible health
factors involved. He pledged his
cooperation in removing the
junk yard from the entrance to
the city.
"One of the things that we are
trying to get across through our
Earth Day activities is to make
our students aware of their
responsibilities for the en-
vironment in which we live,"
Salinas said. "This marks our
fourth Earth Day observance
and its huge success can be
attributed to the cooperation
and imagination of everyone
involved," Salinas continued.

Carrillo addresses
students on Law Day
Hon. O. P. Carillo, District
Judge of the 229th Judicial
District was the guest speaker
at the second Law and Order
Day of the Rio Grande City
Consolidated Independent
School District held Wed-
nesday, May 1st at 10:30 a.m. at
the Multi Purpose Center
Assembly Hall, according to
R.C. Salinas Jr., Ad-
ministrative Assistant to the
Superintendent of Schools.
I^aw and Order Day is the
culminating activity of Law
Enforcement education which
has been mandated by the State
Legislature for all 8th grade
students in the state of Texas in
a 16 hour course. Judge Carillo
spoke to the students about the
origins of law and order, their
responsibilities as members of
the community and their
obligations to society in
general. He made a tremendous
impact on the audience by
telling his audience of 400 8th
graders from Ringgold and
Grulla Junior Highs that he
would be available to them at
any hour of the day or night
should they ever have a
problem to discuss and didn't
want to go to anyone locally. He
ended his talk by com-
plimenting the audience on
their behavior and spurring
them to greater endeavors.
Following the Judge's
departure the leaders of both
schools had lunch together at
the Rattlers Den together with
their principals, Messrs. J. M
Longoria Jr., and Ismael Pena,
abd guests Mr. R. C. Salinas,
Mr. Joe Herrera and Mr. Nancy
Munoz.
The motto, "In God We
Trust" owes its presence on
U.S. coins largely to the in-
creased religious sentiment
existing during the Civil War.
