This Monday we celebrated a very special holiday. Labor Day.
This day is set aside each year to honor those who work, be they
doctors, plumbers, or ditch diggers. They represent the growth and
development of our country through their work, for work brings
progress and prosperity. Its true meaning is captured in this poem,
entitled, "I Am Work." "I am the foundation of all business. I am
the source of all prosperity. I am the parent of genius. I am the salt
that gives life its savour. I laid the foundation of every fortune. I
can do more to advance youth than his own parents, be they ever so
wealthy. 1 must be loved before I can bestow my greatest blessings
and achieve my greatest ends. Loved, I make life sweet, pur-
poseful, and fruitful. I am represented in the humblest savings, in
the largest block of investments. All progress springs from me."
Labor Day was observed by the students and faculty at Ringgold
Junior High School with a morning assembly held at the school on
Monday. Eighth graders planned the program, which featured
students, Mark Cantu, Paul Doyno, and Diana Gonzalez, who spoke
on "The History of Labor Day." "The Significance of Labor Day,"
and "The Role of Women in Today's Labor Force." A special salute
was extended to the working men and women of the school.

Cooked lentils make a thrifty
and filling salad. Save the liq-
uid in which you have cooked
the lentils and add it to a bar-
ley soup. Because the mixture
may look drab, you may want
to add lots of minced parsley or
scallion.
