State Store License Abolished
AUSTIN - Comptroller Bob
Bullock reminded Texas
business operators Saturday
that the state store license
requirement has been
abolished.
Bullock said his office has
been beseiged with calls and
letters this month by businesses
which were unaware that the
license requirement was
repealed as of Dec. 31, 1974.
"Obviously, the past ad-
ministration didn't get the
message out," Bullock said. "I
consider it good news that
we've been able to do away with
the store license "
The store lict.which
started at $5 for a single store,
was a minor revenue source. Its
repeal by phases was ordered
by the legislature in 1971.
Bullock saicTthat some 240,000
stores in Texas had previously
been covered by the license act.
In 1972 in the United States,
there were 3,256,000 births; in
1973 there were 3,141,000.

CPL Signs Contract
Aimed At Exploration
Central Power and Light
Company and three prominent
Corpus Christi oil and gas
operators today signed a four-
year exploration contract
aimed at finding new oil and gas
supplies for the South Texas
utility company.
The exploration venture is
between CPL and Raul R. Haas,
L.A. McNeil and Emmet C.
Wilson, all of Corpus Christi,
who are the principals in
Corpus Christi Oil and Gas
Company.
Under terms of the contract,
the Corpus Christi oil men will
manage and conduct oil and gas
exploration efforts for CPL in
Railroad Commission Districts
1, 2, 3 and 4-roughly the
southern half of Texas.
Under the agreement, CPL
will be a co-owner of all oil and
gas produced and will have the
option to purchase production
from the other co-owners in the
program.
CPL Public Relations
Director John Speaker said the
project offers "good potential"
tor providing substantial ad-
ditions to CPL's fuel supply.
"This is a comprehensive
exploration program which we
are hopeful will yield sub-
stantial quantities of
new natural gas for use in
generating electricity," he
stated.
CPL uses large quantities of
natural gas as the primary fuel
to fire the boilers at its major
power plants throughout South
Texas.
"We feel fortunate in entering
into this agreement with these
leading oil men," the CPL
spokesman said. "If this
program is successful," he
pointed out, "it will not only
help stabilize our future fuel
supply but will slow down the
rapid escalation in the cost we
are paying for fuel."
"If substantial quantities
new gas are found, we would be
in a better shape to handle
curtailments without burning
fuel oil," Speaker emphasized.
Oil is used as an alternate fuel
at CPL power plants and, at
today's prices, is considerably
more expensive than natural
gas. CPL's power plant boilers
are designed to operate
primarily on natural gas, and
despite a recent $14 million
modification program, can
burn oil only on a limited basis.
The agreement calls for the
contract parties to locate oil
and gas prospects, acquire
leasehold interests, conduct
exploration activites for the
purpose of finding oil and gas
reserves, and develop the
producation. CPL has the right
to terminate the agreement at
the end of each year's
operation.
Haas, McNeil and Wilson will
be responsible for the
management of the exploration
program. The contract with
CPL excludes offshore ex-
ploration.
"This agreement is a major
step toward building an ad-
ditional fuel supply which will
insure a dependable supply of
electricity for our customers
and the future industrial
development of South Texas,"
Speaker said.
