First District Tilt
Pistrict 16-AAA In Review
District warfare in 16-3A
begins this week and heading
the bill of fare is the Donna-
Raymondville clash at
Raymondville.
Donna and Raymondville are
currently tied for the tcp spot in
the district with identical 4-1
records. On the basis of com-
mon foes, Raymondville seems
to have the upper hand as the
Bearkats sneaked by the
Marine Military Academy last
Friday night, 19-17 on a fourth
quarter rally. MMA defeated
the Redskins of Donna the
week before by a score of 19-13.
Either one of these teams
should be hard to stop by the
other district members and the
winner of this game should go
on to post season play.
Edcouch-Elsa, which had
held its last three opponents
scoreless until last Friday
night, was stopped by an
aroused Brownsville St. Joseph
team, 17-7. The Yellowjackets
travel to Falfurrias Friday to
battle the fourth place Jerseys.
E-E is currently in third place
behind Donna and Raymond-
ville.
Donna, Falfurrias, Rio
Grande City and Mercedes
were open last week but all will
see action this Friday. It looks
as if the schedule was planned
according to the standings with
the number one and two teams
playing each other, the number
three and four teams playing
each other and the number five
and six teams playing each
other.
The two cellar-dwellers, Rio
Grande City and Mercedes will
size each other up in Rio And
the result should be a good
defensive game.
Leading the Bearkats will be
a wide assortment of quality
backs in the form of Bobby
Denny, Ray Llanes, Bill Burden
and David Contreras.
Up front, the 'Kats count on
Eloy Bazaldua (190), Silver
Almanza (197) and Felix
Ramirez (175). Backing these
will be Duane Bearfen (204) and
John Solis (215). Raymondville
has what might be the biggest
line in the Valley.
Donna, the perennial Valley
football power and the only
Valley football team to ever win
a state championship, is ex-
pected to counter with running
back Rey Grado, George
Hernandez, Mitch Kitayama
and Tommy Stuart.
On the line, Donna has power
in Kevin Sanders (171), Beto
Perez (210) and Abbie Balli
(190).
E-E's Yellowjackets with
outstanding players like
Howard Ramirez (190), Adolfo
Sonen (180), Andy Anderson
(200) and Rene Reyes (202) will
deal with the Fal Jersey's Levi
Martinez (170), Roel Casanova
(185) and Isaac Garza (155).
Mercedes will attempt to
escape defeat at Rattler
Stadium by coming to the Rat-
tlers with 160 pound quar-
terback Gibby Moreno, Albert
Rangel (145) and Ricky Vela
(135). The Rattlers will counter
with Fred Sanchez (210),
Hernan Garza (188), Jose Luis
Hernandez (180) and Enrique
Gonzalez (167).
★ ★★★★★
It will be the battle of the two
bottom teams Friday night in
Rio Grande City when the
Rattlers host the Mercedes
Tigers holders of a won-loss
record of 1-4.
The game will pit two of-
fenses which rank fifth and
sixth in the league. Mercedes
has produced 29 points to the
Rattlers' 28. The Rio Rattlers
rank sixth in the 16-3A stan-
dings with a 2-3 won -loss record
thanks to a forfeited game by
Sharyland which beat Rio, 21-
14.
In reality the Rattlers have
dropped four games while only
winning one and that victory
came at the expense of the La
Joya Coyotes, 7-0. Mercedes,
too, beat La Joya to the tune of
16-0.
A large crowd is expected at
Rattler field for, besides the

football game, it will be Dad's
Night. The band and football
sweethearts will also be
selected that night.
In the first week of action Rio
lost to Sharyland 21-14 while
Mercedes was dropping one to
La Feria 14-0. The second week
saw Rio blank the La Joya
Coyotes 7-0 while Mercedes was
dropping its second in a row, 19-
0 to Brownsville Hanna. The
third week saw Laredo United
drop Rio, 29-7 while Mercedes
was zipping La Joya 16-0.
With all the victories obtained
so far already under their belts,
the Rattlers and Tigers both
lost during the fourth week. Rio
was zapped by Hebronville, 39-
0, while Mercedes was losing a
squeaker to Rio Hondo, 16-13.
Crystal City then came to Rio
and blanked the Rattlers 28-0.
Mercedes was routed by
Brownsville St. Joe 34-0 on the
same weekend.
Thus far Rio has scored 28
offensive points while allowing
117. Mercedes has scored 29
while their opposition has
scored 83.
Coach Don Cummings of Rio
said The Rattlers have shown
plenty of hustle and spirit after
having an open date last week.
' We are improving each week
and we are rebuilding, " he
said.
"Mercedes throws pretty well
and our defensive unit has been
practicing against the pass all
week," said Cummings
One Junior Varsity player,
Noel Hernandez (152, Soph.)
has been elevated to the varsity
and he is expected to see action.
The Mercedes Tigers,
coached by first year coach
David Robledo, are small and
not very heavy and because ot
their good pass defense, Rio will
not do too much passing.
Running the ball for Rio will
be Hernan Garza, Billy Cum-
mings, and new fullback Fred
Sanchez. Cummings and
Sanchez were linemen but were
moved to take advantage of
their weight and aggressiveness,
according to Cummings.
Game time for Friday's tilt is
8 o'clock.
Thursday, the seventh and
eight grade will take on the
Mercedes Jr. High at 5:30 and
7:30 p.m. respectively.
The B-teain and Freshmen
will travel to Mercedes to do
battle there.
LOLICM IS A RIGHTY
DETROIT — Mickey
Lolich, Detroit's winningest
left-handed pitcher, is actually
right-handed. When he was 2
years old he had a tricycle ac-
cident and fractured his collar-
bone. Physical therapy forced
him to use his left arm and he
learned to pitch left-handed.
But he does everything else
with his right hand.
He plays golf right-handed,
and uses his right hand to eat
and write.
