the residents from proceeds recovered through the heifer raffle
held recently.

Honor Roll Announced
In keeping with the theme
"Celebrating Our Bicentennial
Through Unity, Service, and
Dedication" the Woman's Club
of Rio Grande City evening
program, Thursday, October
16, was entitled, "They Signed
for Us"-"We mutually pledge to
each other our lives, our for-
tunes, and our sacred
honor". .Declaration of In-
dependence.
Mrs. John H. (Olive)
Hinojosa, retired teacher and
recognized historian, gave a
most interesting and in-
formative program on the
signers. "The United States of
America was born on July 4,
1776, and the Declaration of
Independence was its birth
certificate." Mrs. Hinojosa
briefly enumerated most of the
important events of the climatic
period in early American
history culminating in the
"indictment against Getrge
III."
Mrs. Hinojosa said, "Thomas
Jefferson rented a room above
a stable and amid the heat and
horse flies in twenty days
drafted one of the most im-
portant documents ever
written... a list of twenty-five
abuses and usurpations in
justification of the action being

She further classified the
fifty-six signers of the
Declaration of Independence-
who risked their lives, for-
tunes and sacred honor...but
they signed for us knowing full
well that the penalty would be
death if they were captured by
the British." Mrs. Hinojosa
then briefly related how the
majority were haunted by the
British; and the famous
historical personalities we are
familiar with who "gave us and
all posterity the admonition
FREEDOM AND IN-
DEPENDENCE FOREVER."
The president, Mrs. Gilberto
A. Garza, presided during the
business meeting which was
held in the home of Mrs. A.J.
Vale, the hostess. Others
present were: Mesdames lino
Perez Jr.; J.C. Ramirez; R.R.
Guerra, Sr.; Howard L. Bass;
Edwin LaGrange; Mabel G.
Sanchez; J.M. Yzaguirre,
Frank Anderson, F.V. Ramon;
John A. Pope, Jr.; George
Boyle; and Alex Hinojosa.
The next meeting will be
hosted by Mrs. Perez, at her
residence on November 6.
HEIFER RAFFLE-Shown above with the 600 pound heifer which
was raffled by the Retama Manor Home are I left to right) Israel
Olivarez, Feliciano Saenz, Patricia Pollard, Retama ad-
ministrator, and County Commissioner Reynaldo (Moreno) Alaniz,
who donated the young cow. Winner of the heifer was Jose M.
Barrera of Roma.
