Two prominent Rio Grande
City residents, Mrs. Florence
Johnson Scott and George R.
Boyle, are among guest writers
contributing to "Gift of the
Rip", a 300-page book about the
Lower Rio Grande Valley which
will be available Dec. 1. Some
two dozen Valleyites, whose
careers range from from
geologist to photographer,
artist to educator, wrote
chapters relating to their
particular interest or research.
Boyle, a frontier history buff

the North American Indian,
especially of the Southwest. His
chapter gives glimpses of the
nomadic Indian tribes
which inhabited the region
adjacent to the lower Rio
Grande prior to Spanish
colonization.

authority on the Spanish
Colonial Era, contributed the
chapter on the history of Starr
County. "Gift of the Rio" a non-

The author of four historical
books with Valley background,
Mrs. Scott has been awarded
many honors. The most recent
was her election as a fellow in
the Texas State Historical
Association for "meticulous
and investigative research of
the Spanish era of the Lower
Rio Grande Valley."
As former superintendent of
schools in Starr County and
Roma , Mrs. Scott encouraged
Junior Historians to contact
descendants of the Original
Spanish grantees in the ranches
for land documents. She is
former president of the Texas
Federation of Women's Clubs
and has been an active member
of state, Valley and county
historical groups. While still
engaged in writing, Mrs. Scott
often is consulted by others
delving into Valley history who
benefit from her guidance and
encouragement.
