New Party Sweeps Starr Coun ty Vote
The Starr County Democratic
Party, otherwise known as the
New Party, landed a resoun-
ding blow to the United Grouos
for Better Government faction
and took all county seats, ac-
cording to election returns
tabulated early Sunday.
Heading the list of victors
were incumbent Sheriff
Reymundo "Rey" Alvarez,
incumbent County Tax
Assessor - Collector Crisoforo
Munoz, incumbent precinct 1
County Commissioner Hector
Lozano and newcomer Benito
Saenz Jr as county
democratic chairman.
Also coming out ahead in the
race for 229th district judge
was present District Attorney
Arnulfo Guerra. Guerra,
however, was soundly defeated
in Duval County, 3356 to 1385, by
his opponent, Ricardo H.
Garcia Jr. Garcia will take over
the unexpired term of former
judge O.P. Carrillo who was
removed early this year. In
Starr County, Guerra received
the majority of the votes. 3832 to
2586. Guerra also netted 1176
votes to Garcia's 904 in Jim
Hogg County.
F A. "Pancho" Cerda
defeated Nago L. Alaniz in
another heated race for district
attorney of the 229th Judicial
District. Starr County voters
gave the edge to Alaniz 3413 to
2750. However, as in the Garcia-
Guerra race, Jim Hogg and
Duval counties supporteu Cerda
4994 to 2101.
A total of 561 absentee votes
were cast in all races.
Starr County voters also gave
their vote of support to Eligio
"Kika" de la Garza. Kika, as he
is widely known, defeated Angel
Noe Gonzalez, 4426 to 952, in
their contest for United States
Representative, 15th District.
De ia Garza was declared the
winner in ,ill nine voting
precincts including absentee
votes.
Lloyd Bentsen easily out-
distanced his opponents as he
polled 3,833 more votes than
I^eon Dugi (166), Hugh Wilson
88) and Phil Gramm (186).
In counfywide races, Sheriff
Alvarez netted 3810 votes to
Fernando Salinas' 2724. Alvarez
carried all precincts except
voting precinct 5 which he lost
57-56.
Tax Assessor - Collector
Munoz defeated his opponent,
Fliseo "Smitty" Smith Jr., 3503-
2861. Munoz also carried all the
voting precincts including
absentee voting.
Guadalupe Villarreal, in-
cumbent county democratic
chairman, was unseated by
Benito Saenz Jr., a local
teacher. Saenz received the
most votes in all precincts
except precinct 3( 799-787) and
precinct 6 (719-603).
In the county commissioner,
precinct 1 race, J. M. "Chema"
Alvarez defeated Humberto A.
Munoz, 1029 to 841. Alvarez took
voting precinct 3, 933-717.
Munoz received 71 votes to
Alvarez' 47 in voting precinct 5.
Munoz also received 53 ab-
sentee votes to Alvarez' 49.
For county commissioner,
precinct 3, Hector I/)zano, the
incumbent, defeated Ramiro
Bermea, 1004 to 740. Lozano
took precincts 8 and 9 (490 to 340
and 348 to 220, respectively)
while Bermea pulled in 180
absentee votes to Lozano's 166.
In other races, Adolfo M.
Ramirez defeated Crisanto "La
Tana" Guerra Jr., 1018 to 810.
Cirilo Orta defeated Jose F.
Villarreal, 879 to 830. That race
was for constable precinct 2. In
the constable precinct 3 race,
Norberto "Robe" Montalvo
defeated Francisco Silva 1026 to
715. For constable precinct 4,
AJdo M. Medina defeated A. B.
"Dutch" Piper, the incumbent,
and Aristeo Richmond, 497 to
296 to 52. respectively.
Mary H. Gonzalez defeated
Oscar Meyers, 251 to 200 for
precinct chairman, precinct 1.
Manuel P. Guillen topped
Cornelio Alvarez 955-769 in the
race for precinct chairman,
precinct 3. For precinct
chairman, precinct 5, I.auro
Garza defeated Horacio Perez
6749.
Miguel G. I-opez Sr. defeated
Fidel Garza, 495-328, in their
race for precinct chairman
precinct 8. In the precinct 9,
chairman race, Jose Maria
Ixingoria Jr. received 484 votes
to Moises Gutierrez' 398.
Votes polled by precinct
follow: Pet 1, 433; Pet. 2, 400;
Pet. 3, 1665; Pet. 4, 457; Pet. 5,
124; Pet. 6, 1444; Pet. 7, 276;
Pet. 8 , 863; Pet. 9, 574.
A total of 6797 ballots were
polled in what County Clerk
Jose Hinojosa termed a
heavier than usual turnout."

ployes of Southwest Airlines
voted 98 per cent today to reject
;i management contract, and
strike if necessary.
M. Lamar Muse, Southwest
president, said Tuesday about
30 employes were involved in
the contract dispute. He said
Southwest would continue to op-
erate whether or not a strike is
called.
"The pilots have assured us
that if necessary even they will
help with the baggage," Muse
said.
J. D. Crow, president of Air-
line Dist. 146 and general chair-
man of the International Asso-
ciation of Machinists and Aero-
space Workers, said 90 persons
were affected by the negotia-
tions.

Assistant Vice-President Of Valley Federal Named
J. G. Garza, president of
Valley Federal Savings has
announced that H. P. Guerra
has been named assistant vice
president and officer in charge
for Valley Federal Savings' Rio
Grande City Office, scheduled
to open late this spring.
Guerra is a graduate of Rio
Grande City High School,
received his BBA Degree from
St. Mary's University in San
Antonio in 1955 and from St.
Mary's University School of
Law, his Doctor of
Jurisprudence Degree in 1956.
Prior to joining Valley
Federal in February of this
year, Guerra was associated in
the practice of law with Judin
Ellis Gonzalez & Barron, At-
torneys at I,aw in McAllen.
Prior to this time, he served as
president and director of the
Groos National Bank in San
Antonio and earlier as vice
president and director of the
First State Bank & Trust
Company in Rio Grande City.
H. P. Guerra is a member of
the State Bar of Texas and
Hidalgo County Bar
Association. He was admitted to
practice before the U.S.
Supreme Court and Court of
Military Appeals He was a
member of the Finance Com-
mission, State of Texas, from
1972 to 1974. Guerra is a past
member, president and
director of the Rio Grande City
Jaycees. Served as the U.S.
Jaycee Ambassador to San
Salvador, Central America and
coordinator of U.S. Jaycee
Ambassador Program for South
and Central America for the
United States Jaycees.
Guerra is a member of the
Knights ot Columbus, Order of
Alhembra, and a member of the
School Board of Our Lady of
Sorrows Catholic School in
McAllen.
H. P. Guerra served in the U.
S. Army from 1956 to 1958 and is
presently serving in the U.S.
Army Reserve, assigned to the
4219th U.S.A.R. Log Command
in McAllen. He presently holds
rank of Major in the Judge
Advocate General's Corps and
will attain the rank of Lt.
Colonel, effective May 28, 1976.
H. P. and his wife, Josefa
have three children and reside
at 207 Highland in McAllen.
They are members of Our Lady
of Sorrows Catholic Church,
McAllen.
J. G. Garza stated that Valley
Federal was extremely for-
tunate in having the services of
Mr H P. Guerra. His ex-
perience and expertise in
financial matters and his vast
knowledge of the area will
greatly enhance Valley
Federal's desire to be part of
the Starr County Community.
