Dear Consumer
Get Your Temporary CB Permit Here
By Virginia Knauer
Special Assistant to the President
and Director
Office of Consumer Affairs
Department of Health, Education and Welfare
I am pleased to report that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
has made it easier for consumers to get a license to operate a CB radio. The new
system provides you with a temporary license while your application for a
permament license is being processed.
If you do not have either a temporary or permanent license to operate a
CB, you risk a tine of .$10,000 by FCC.
Your newspaper has been kind enough to reprint the FCC temporary CB
license form. Simply fill it out at the same time you mail your application for a
permanent license. Keep the temporary license with you until the permanent
one comes.

Colleges
Receive
Grants
More than $10.7 million has
been awarded to 287 colleges
and universities for cooperative
education programs during the
1976-77 academic year, HEW's
Office of Education announced
today.
The grants will help support
programs that give post-
secondary education students
the opportunity to alternate
periods of full-time academic
study with periods of full-time
employment relating to their
study. Although the awards are
primarily for planning, im-
plementing, or expanding
existing cooperative education
programs, some support is also
provided for training personnel
administering the programs
and for funding applicable
research.
Under the program, colleges
arrange with outside employers
to hire students for an academic
period at the current pay scale.
The work closely relates to the
student's field of study,
providing career experience as
well as financial support. The
time spent working -- a
semester, for example - is
complemented by time in the
college classroom.
Of the grants awarded for the
1976-77 academic year, 268,
totaling $10 million, will be used
by institutions to administer the
program; 15, totaling $612,901,
will be used for staff training;
and 4, totaling $1117,099, will be
used for research.
The money may be used for
personnel, travel, and other
authorized costs. No part of the
funds may be used for student
salaries and no program may
receive Federal support for
more than three years.
The Cooperative Education
Program is authorized by the
Higher Education Act of 1969,
as amended.
Of Guatemala's 42,042 square
miles, the lowland of the Peten
region makes up about a third.
This area is half jungle, half
savanna and is rich in timber
and wildlife.
