Time For Soil Sampling
TOE no GRANDE HERALD
rAGUE 4
Anv farming operation
requires planning, and this is
particularly true when it
comes to applying fertilizer.
Fertilizer applications
should be based on a soil
test, and fall is a good time to
take soil samples for testing,
points out David Sandefer
county agent for the Texas
Agricultural Extension
Service.
Containers and in-
structions for submitting soil
' i are available at the
county Extension office.
Based on a soil test, a sound
fertilization program can be
developed for the coming
year.
Such a program will be
increasingly important in
the months ahead. Under
present economic con-
ditions, low yields are not
profitable, and fertilization,
at least with nitrogen, is
generally necessary for
profitable yields. Yet, the
need fori
and its potential profitability
should be closely evaluated.
For additional information
on fertilizer use in Starr
County, Sandefer invites
producers to contact the
Extension office for in-
formation and results of
fertilizer demonstrations
conducted in this county.
Various fertilizer rates
were used on some crops to
determine the highest profit
potential, and these studies

People And Places By Ti* a
Spooks and goblins did abound on October 31 in
Rio Grande City. Trick-or-treaters roamed the
area and several Jamaicas, parties, and contests
were held.
Residents of Retama Manor really enjoyed their
Halloween party held on Monday night. Winners of
their costume contest were Serapio (Papo)
Benavidez, Ugliest; Ana Lisa Martinez, Pret-
tiest; and Ariel Guerra, Jr., Cutest. Judges were
Julio Saenz, Kent Parks, Mrs. Rosario Pope,
Adrian Ramirez, and Mrs. Edna Ramon.

contest participants attended the Halloween
party.
Another 100 creepy spooks and 50 adults enjoyed
a Halloween party on that scary night as guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Guadalupe (Lupito) Villarreal and
Mr. and Mrs. Ramiro Munoz.
There was a pinata and games, and the children
participated in various contests. Gifts were
awarded to the most original costume, the ugliest,
and the funiiiest.
The hosts provided additional entertainment for
the guests by dressing up as a vampire, devil,
mummy, and fat lady. The children especially
liked the tour through the very original haunted
house, full of frights in every corner.
Parents of the children enjoyed visiting with
friends and everyone indulged in plenty of treats,
such as candy, cookies, peanuts, cupcakes, and
caramel apples.
