All people have feelings or emotions-even
children. In expressing their emotions,
children usually imitate their parents and
other family members, so it's important to
provide them with examples, says a family
life education specialist.
Examples that help the most are those
that show children how to express emotions
in positive ways, Cindy Wilson explains.
Mrs. Wilson is with the Texas Agricultural
Extension Service, The Texas A&M
University System.
First, remember two important points:
Everyone has feelings, and we can express
them in appropriate ways in society.
Parents confuse children when they follow
the old idea of "Do as I say, not as I do."
Below are suggestions for helping
children to express their emotions ef-
fectively : Encourage and allow children to
label their feelings correctly, to accept them
and discuss them; assist children in ex-
pressing their feelings, and avoid shaming
children for their feelings. Anger is a
natural feeling, for example, and it is not
bad or naughty.
Also, help youngs ters learn the difference
between emotions and behavior-and to use
appropriate behavior. For instance, anger
is OK, but hitting someone is not OK. Teach
your children to develop appropriate
emotional outlets-and to use these outlets in
place of inappropriate behavior. Ideas for
appropriate emotional outlets are
playdough or clay for pounding, and a
punching bag or a pillow for punching. For
sadness, suggest a story, a walk or a bicyle
ride.
Also, avoid constant use of food to ease
emotional pain or to celebrate feeling great.
Finally, avoid overreacting to children's
expressions of feelings. They are exploring
a whole range of emotions, and, at times,
may tend to overreact themselves.

So much love to give
redo....
So much love to give *
Q. I dated a nice man for almost 4 years.
He was warm and nice to be with. But 1 feel
he was ashamed of me because he wouldn't
take me anywhere. We'd watch TV at my
apartment. He had a good many problems
with finances and health, and many times I
went without just to help him. I never
regretted it. I loved him and still do. A year
ago he asked me to get a loan for him, and I
couldn't do it. I haven't heard from him or
seen him since. What can I do to get him off
my mind? I'm 32 and I'm hurt and lonely. I
have so much love to give and want so much
to marry.
A. You impress me as a person with a
warm and giving nature whose desire to
give
n and giving nature whose desire to
love and marry blinded you to this
man who,quite abruptly, disappeared when
you could no longer help him. I can un-
derstand how hurt and lonely you feel. But
dwelling on these thoughts will not bring you
happiness or someone to love. Try to direct
yourself toward new friends; join a church
group, an exercise class, a community
organization. Open yourself up to new
people and new situations, and soon your
mind will be dwelling on the future and its
opportunities rather than on the past.

WASHINGTON - In or-
der to achieve effective litter
abatement, every state should
adopt a litter recycling law like
the ones now in effect in nine
states, an expert in the field
suggests.
Malcolm W Owings, chair-
man of the legislative com-
mittee of the Can Manufac-
turers Institute, reports that in
Washington, a state that has a
litter recycling law, litter was
reduced by as much as 60 per-
cent in some areas, according
to the state's DeparUnent of
Ecology.
Owings says that recycling
laws which are directed to
cleaning up all waste have
proven to be more effective
than bottle bills, laws which re-
quire deposits on beverage bot-
tles and cans. He adds that in
the past year, 32 states have
rejected bottle bill legislation in
one form or another
