The Air Force is offering more than 200
scholarships that can ease the financial
strain of medical school and allow students
to concentrate more on studies, said
Captain James R Broyles here today.
The four-year Armed Forces Health
Professions Scholarships pay full tuition
plus the cost of books, fees and laboratory
expenses, and more than $550 per month of
living expenses.
To be eligible, a student must be a U.S.
citizen accepted for enrollment in an
approved school of Allopathic or Os-
teopathic medicine, said Captain Broyles.
Participation is based on competitive
selection.
There is a two-year Air Force service
obligation for the first two years a student
is in the program. Thereafter, there is a
six-month obligation for every six months
or less participation Students without
prior military service must serve a
minimum of three years.
Students serve 45 days annual active
duty as an Air Force second lieutenant,
drawing full pay and allowances for that
grade. During this time they perform
limited clinical duties or attend an Air
Force orientation course. According to
Captain Broyles, the training period is
designed to provide meaningful military
and professional experience appropriate to
education level and abilities

The decision to authorize out of district

training highlighted Monday night's brief
special school board meeting.
School trustee Rafael Carrera moved,
and Bobby Gutierrez seconded, that the
school employee reservists be allowed to
attend Army training. "Tony"' Falcon
moved, and Gutierrez seconded, that
Alberto Barrera be authorized to attend
the National Title VII Directors Manage-
ment Institute in Washington, D C. from
Feb. 21-24
Falcon and Gutierrez helped pass a
resolution that authorized Walter Watson,
Ringgold Jr High Assistant Principal, to
attend a Texas Association of Assistant
