H.E.B. Prepares For
Customers 11th Hour Dash
'Tis the season for tinsel, holly,
mistletoe, candy canes, egg nog,
Jolly '01 St. Nick, Frosty the
Snowman, Kris Kringle, Rudolph
The Red Nosed Reindeer and the
infamous, Christmas Eve shopper.
You know the type. The ones who
can be spotted dashing into a store
right after work with a crumpled
list on one hand and their money in
the other. They have a wild look of
red and green panic in their eyes
and are experiencing frantic head
movements from left to right in
order to find the closest aisle
stocked with good things to buy.
They don't understand why the
store is out of the beautiful
wrapping paper and matching
ribbon they have been eyeing for
the last two weeks, and are now
panicked about having to wrap
their treasured purchases in brown
paper bags.
H-E-B Foods/Drugs Stores has
identified this annual phenomenon
as the ChristmasEve "llth-hour
dash," because as their customers
have discovered, grocery stores
have become a great place to shop
for gifts of all kinds.
H-E-B's employees are experi-
enced in detecting those doing "the
dash," and have mastered the art
in helping these customer select
gifts to complete gift lists quickly.
According to Melissa Stenicka,
H-E-B's vice president advertising
and sales promotion, some of it's
year's hottest sellers at H-E-B are:
• Adult Games-Pictionary is this
year's hottest.
•Fischer Price's Play Food Set
•Bicycles-another standard
Christmas sell-out
•Model Kits-especially model
cars
•Stuffed Animals-bears are most
popular
"While these items are selling
fast, there will also be lots of other
great gift options and hostess gifts
still available in our stores for
those infamous last minute shop-
pers," comments Stenicka.
Stenicka adds that the following
are tips for a "dasher's" best bet
in finding gift merchandise on
Christmas Eve.
•the floral department for
poinsettas, tropical plants, fresh
and silk flower arrangements,
fragrant holiday candle arrange-
ments.
•the deli department for gift
baskets ranging from gourmet
cheeses, smoked meats, fruits,
imported chocolates, etc.
•fruit and nut baskets from the
produce department
•champagne, premium wines and
imported beer
•personal care products such as
cosmetics, fragrance and cologne
gift sets and cosmetic cases
•cookware sets, mugs and kitch-
en gadgets
•men's and women's watches,
candles, candy, stocking stuffers
and a whole lot more.
Stenicks's words of advice to
those who will soon be dashing
through the doors of an H.E.B
store is that they can leave their
red and green panic at home
because there will be something for
everyone on their gift lists, they
just need to know where to look.
Facts fr
Only five percent of Americans
donate blood: Sixty percent are
eligible, but only five percent give.
There will be even fewer donors in
the years to come because there are
more restrictions on who can give
blood. Since 1984, three new tests
have been added to make blood safer
for recipients than ever before—an
AIDS test, a liver function test and
tests for hepatitis.
Running back Bobby Garcia, left, and offensive guard
Aaron Garcia are the two Rattlers on this year's
All-Valley team. Bobby Garcia is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Rafael Garcia, and Aaron Garcia is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lisandro Garcia.
Blood transfusions are essential
for the thousands of people who have
operations, are involved in serious
accidents, or have life-threatening
diseases such as aplastic anemia,
the often-fatal blood disease that
strikes 2,000 Americans a year.

There are three things you can do
to protect the blood supply. Donate
blood regularly. Don't skip donating
during the summer or holiday sea-
son. Encourage others to donate. For

TDH Helps Hearing-
Impaired Children
Thanks to a special new device,
provided by the Texas Department
of Health, (TDH), a 4-year old
Austin girl, born profoundly deaf,
is learning to "feel" sound
Last month, she began an exper-
imental program using an
electrotactile device that emits
small electrical charges in re
sponse to sound The device, worn
around the abdomen, resembles a
belt Eighteen points out across the
front of the belt deliver tingling
sensations at different places for
different sounds
Dr Clift Price. TDH's Associate
Commissioner for Personal Health
Servies. explained, "The
electrotactile device gives the child
one more sense with which to
distinguish sounds and meanings,
and eventually language It is an
experimental, state-of-the-art piece
of equipment--the first of its kind in
Texas
"We are hoping it will prove to
be a practical way to augment a
deaf child s communication skills,"
he said
The TDH Children's Hearing Aid
Loan Program (CHALP) has
purchased three electrotactile de-
vices, costing about $3,500 each.
The first one is being used at the
Regional Day School for the Deaf
in Austin. The other two have been
placed with the University of Texas
in Dallas and the Regional Day
School for the Deaf in Amarillo
The TDH program has used
similar, though less complex
equipment-called vibrotactile de-
vices,, for about a year These are
typically worn around the wrist
and vibrate on one or two channels
in response to sound
"CHALP will have 65 vibrotactile
devices available for deaf children
throughout the state by the end of
this year Because of the expense,
additional electratactiles will not
be purchased until we can clearly
document their benefit," Dr Price
said
He added that even the most
expensive device costs only one
tenth as much as cochlear implant
surgery and, unlike surgery, is
reversible "If it doesn't help the
child, we can simply take it away
and try something else," he
explained.
TDH places these devices under
contract with audiologists and
teaches who help deaf children
learn to use them, usually in a
school setting
CHALP serves children whose
families have incomes at or below
the federal poverty level by pro-
viding diagnostic evaluations,
hearing aid evaluations and
check-ups, and counseling for pa-
tient and family In addition, the
program purchases and loans
hearing aids for financially eligible
children
In fiscal year 1986, CHALP
served more than 2,000 Texas
children, supplying more than 1,100
of them with hearing aids
About 120 speech and hearing
centers throughout the state con-
tract with TDH to provide these
services

Photography is more popular than
ever. Thanks to advancements in
electronics and optics, even lirst-
time photographers can get great
pictures with today's compact 35mm
autofocus and fixed lens cameras.
In the last five years, 15 million
35mm compact cameras were sold
in the U.S. In 1987 alone, the total
number of com pacts sold in the U.S.
will reach 6 million.
To expand the versatility of these
point-and-shoot cameras, a new fil-
ter system has beer, developed by
French photographer Jean Coquin.
It's called the "Cokin Creative Fil-
ter System for Compact Cameras,"
and it enables users to easily add
dramatic color, tones and special
effects to their pictures.
