Skin Cancer Screening
Clinic Held
A McAllen dermatologist who
helped conduct a skin cancer
screening clinic Saturday at the
Rural Health Initiative clinic near
Rio Grande City says that South
Texans need to take into account
the various risk factors involved in
the various types of this serious
disease.
Dr. Richard Newton said, "This
is my first time in Rio Grande City
to do a skin cancer clinic." Newton,
originally from Laredo, moved to
McAllen in 1988.
Newton said, "Having as much
sun as we do in this part of the
country is a high-risk factor. People
with light complexion and light
eyes are at the highest risk."
Newton noted that the American
Academy of Dermatology is
working with the American Cancer
Society to do as many skin clinics
as possible."
The most serious type of skin
cancer, ..aid Newto, is melanoma,
which can occur anywhere between
ages 20 and 60. Besides excessive
exposure to the sun. heredity is a
factor involved in melanoma.
Newton said that the survival rate
for melanoma depends on early
detection. Approximately 600,000
skin cancer cases occur per year in
the United States, including 27,000
melanoma cases. Of these 27,000
individuals diagnosed with
melanoma, roughly 7000 will die.
Melanoma is almost always curable
when detected in its early stages.
Newton said, "Using a sunscreen
is one of the best ways to protect
against skin cancer. A number 15
sunscreen or better is recommended.
That means you can withstand 15
times more sunlight than without
using it."
Newton said, "The sun is most
damaging on the skin between 11
a.m. and 3 p.m. It depends on how
long it takes to gel a sunburn."
Newton stressed, "Skin cancer is
the most common cancer for both
men and women. As
dermatologists, we want people to
protect themselves while they're
outdoors."
Government
Contracts
Seminar
Scheduled
Austin--This year, local, state,
and federal governments will
purchase an estimated $200 billion
in goods and services.
Learning how to bid on
government contracts will be the
topic of a seminar to be held in
McAllen at 8.00 a.m., Tuesday,
July 11, 1989, in the Ball Room of
the Pan American University, 1201
West University Drive, Edinburg.
Topics and workshops to be
presented in the conference include:
how to do business with the federal
government and the state of Texas,
how to become listed on the
bidders mailing list for federal
agencies, using computer-matched
bidding opportunities and special
programs for small and
disadvantaged businesses.
Prc-rcgistration for the conference
is S10. The seminar begins at 8:00
a.m. and concludes at 12:00 noon.
Registration and more information
are available by calling the Pan
American University Center for
Entrepreneurship and Economic
Development at (512) 381-3361.
Most dermatologists suggest a
monthly self-examination for
possible skin cancer.
The other two types of skin
cancer are Basal Cell carcinoma and
Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The
former usually appears as a small,
fleshy bump or nodule on the head,
neck and hands. These nodules can
occasionally appear on the trunk of
the body, usually as flat growths.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma may
appear as nodules or as red, scaly
patches. It usually is found on the
rim of the ear, the face, the lips and
the mouth.
Both are rarely found in
dark-skinned persons. Squamous
carcinoma can metastasize and
spread to other parts of the body.
Melanoma may suddenly appear
without warning, but it may also
begin in or near a mole or other
dark spot in the skin. For that
reason it is important that people
know the location and appearance of
the moles on their bodies so any
change will be noticed.
Roberto L. Ramirez, a 1979 graduate of Rio Grande
City High School, has been hired as an Associate in the
Brownsville office of the law firm of Ford and Ventura.
Ramirez graduated from the University of Texas at
Austin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government in
1982, and was awarded his law degree from the
University of Texas in 1985. He served as a briefing
attorney for Federal Judge Filemon Vela from
1985-1987.
Likely State Treasurer
Candidate Visits RGC
Harris County Treasurer Nicki
Van Hightower, an all but
announced candidate for the
Democratic Parly nomination for
State Treasurer in 1990, spoke al an
informal reception Thursday
afternoon at the Fort Ringgold
Motor Inn in Rio Grande City.
She noted that as an elected
county official, she cannot
officially announce her candidacy
for state office before Jan. 1, 1990
without resigning her county
position.
She noted that she defeated an
eight-year Republican incumbent to
wi& the position of Harris County
Treasurer in November 1986.
Van Hightower contended, "The
office was behind the times when 1
look over. 1 have modernized the
office; it is now fully automated."
She insisted, "I think my
background suits me to be State
Treasurer. The revenues of Harris
County constitute SI.25 billion."
Van Hightower said that she will
place a heavy stress on family
issues, especially on the damaging
effects of family violence. She
commented, "Family violence
affects an entire family for
generations."
Van Hightower, who was
introduced by Starr County
Treasurer Aurclio Sanchez, traveled
to Starr County after visiting Jim
Wells County Thursday morning.
In June 1979, Van Hightower
was appointed Executive Director of
the Houston Area Women's Center.
She noted that 40,000 women and
children arc currently served each
year by that organization.
Prior to this, she was a
moderator/commentator lor KTRH
Radio in Houston, where she hosted
a daily cali-in talk show and
commented on subjects of local
interest.
From May 1976 until March
1978 she held the position of
Women's Advocate for the City of
Houston. In this post, she worked
to upgrade the status of women cit>
government workers and acted as a
liaison between women in the
community and the mayor's office.
In 1977, she helped organize the
Houston Area Women's Center and
served as its first president from
1 / to 1979. The goal of this
Women s Center, say its organizers,
"is to provide crisis services for
women and their children and a
community center for the use of all
women to further their development
in life."
Van Hightower received her B.A.
