Conviction
across the river? Greed and fear are
the key themes in this episode.
Greed brought this marijuana across
the river...Because of greed, that
marijuana was stolen. Who brought
that sickness over here: fhey were
on a mission for their god...They
came out with their guns shooting
before they even knew who was in
there."
Sawyer insisted, "Why should
Juan Saenz escape prosecution? Tell
me one person they met who wasn't
afraid of them (the individuals from
Mexico). Was Mr. Diaz responsible
as a party for the capital murder of
Jessie Ray Warren? To connect this
man to murder there is only one
assertion."
Sawyer told the jurors, "He must
have known of the plan to kill him
and encouraged it and abetted it. If
that question is no, all else fails.
Can you believe Jerry Lopez?

Would you want a loved one
convicted of murder on the word of
this man?"
The defense attorney insisted,
"'Justicc for all' is what governs the
justice system in our
country...Emotions should not lead
you to a verdict"
In his rebuttal, Silva insisted,
"Don't believe there was no intent
to kill. They didn't go over there for
a picnic. He's in his own vehicle,
with his own keys, with a weapon.
He said, 'I'm not afraid.'"
Silva questioned, "What's he
doing shooting the gun in the
house? Why are bullet holes in the
back of the house? I made the deal
(immunity) after he (Juan Saenz)
gave the statement. Because of his
testimony, we know what
happened."
Silva declared, "A threat has to be
imminent according to the Texas

The Lady Eagles are 13-12 and
will present a difficult foe to beat.
"Mission is tough," Villegas
said. "It's not going to be an easy
game."
Farias will have to work her
magic inside, while Flores' 3-point
shooting must soften up the
Eagles' interior defense.
"Maime is going to have to stay
out of foul trouble and rebound."
Villegas said.
"I know Mission's Gandariagirl
is a good rebounder, so we have to
try to keep her off the boards so
Maime can rebound."
Farias specializes in picking up

offensive rebounds and putting
them back in the hoop, while
Flores, Vanessa Ozuna and
Campos must make their outside
shots and free throws.
"Desiree can shoot well from the
outside," Villegas said. "It will
free Maime inside and then we'll be
alright.
"We do need to make our layups,
hit our easy shots and we'll be
O.K."
A lack of solid depth hurts Rio.
"Basically, what hurts us is when
we get into foul trouble," Villegas
said.

Penal Code. If he (Diaz) wanted to,
he could have let him (Warren)
go...Nobody forced them to do
anything. He (Diaz) was going to
make $180,000 on one transaction.
He wasn't afraid; he was angry."
The District Attorney added, "He
(Diaz) provided the vehicle; he
drove the vehicle. He assisted in
putting him in the vehicle and
helped drag him out of the
house...All the evidence shows he
was there and was there only for
one thing."
Silva concluded by exhorting the
jurors, "Find him guilty because he
is guilty. Do what it right because
that is what the evidence shows."
Silva later indicated, "Evidence
shows Warren was taken to the
Ismael Diaz, Jr., residence and then
switched to a pickup owned by
Ismael Diaz, Jr. There's no evidence
as to who stole the marijuana."
Trustees

Zarate commented, "I've never
seen a program like this. This
represents a lot of literary and
artistic talent." Villarreal
emphasized, "I know this district
will win the Super Bowl of
education. We will try to make the
dreams of kids become a reality. I
congratulate the kids for this
tremendous function."
Jose Luis Garza declared, "I made
a commitment three years ago to do
what is best for the school district.
I renew that commitment tonight."
Gutierrez stated, "I thank my
family, and I thank the educators,
administrators and students. I will
do the best I can for this school
district and the kids."
Dr. Gonzalez expressed pride and
satisfaction at having served the
district as a trustee for 12 years and
emphasized his opinion that
students should come first.
Jimenez stated, "I thank
principals, teachers and students for
this program. With all of us
working together, we're making
this district the best in the state of
Texas."

Martinez later said, "I have heard
there is an option for safekeeping of
partial payments. It (the audit) will
probably cover three months of
Fiscal Year -97."
The commissioners then
proceeded to approve the
independent audit as requested.
Pena's request that a fax line be

commissioners.
The commissioners approved a

said, "This can be handled within
the budget."
The commissioners approved a
resolution in support of the Crime
Victim Assistance Program of the
state Criminal Justice Division.
The resolution was presented to the
commissioners by District Attorney
Heriberto Silva.
The commissioners approved the
request by Chief Deputy Reymundo
Guerra that Deputy Homer Flores
be appointed as the new project
director for the Speed Step and

effective immediately.
Concerning dealings with the
Community Action Council of
South Texas concerning the

scheduled for Jan. 24. We can bring
this up at a later time."
Concerning the balance due to the
City of Roma for its participation
in the Starr County International
Bridge for the fiscal year ending
Sept. 30, 1996, Lopez said, "From
what I can see, $50,000 is what we
will owe."
Martinez asked, "Should we
commit monies before we have an
exact figure?" Precinct Four
Commissioner Abel N. Gonzalez,
Jr., suggested, "I think we should
wait." A consensus was reached that
the commissioners wait for an exact
figure before committing funds.
New drug proves helpful to
Alzheimer's disease patients
HOUSTON- Aricept, a new drug
approved for Alzheimer's disease,
improves the symptoms and daily
functioning of many patients.
"In the more than 900 mild to
moderate Alzheimer's patients
studied nationwide, 80 percent
showed improvement or didn't get
any worse," said Dr. Rachelle
Doody, Clinical director of the
Alzheimer's Disease Research
Center at Baylor college of
Medicine in Houston.
Aricept was tested for five years
in clinical trials involving more
than 30 centers in the United
States. Approved by the Food and
Drug Administration in late
November 1996, it is expccted to
be available in most pharmacies by
mid-January or early February.
Doctors measured Aricept's
effectiveness by using standard
Alzheimer's memory evaluation
tests and by interviewing patients
and caregivers to assess changes in
daily functioning.
"With the drug, we saw patients
who became more attentive to their
surroundings or who picked up on
old routines they had forgotten,"
said Doody, who lead several
clinical trials at Baylor.
The drug contains an enzyme that
blocks the breakdown of
acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in
the brain.
"Acetylcholine is associated with
memory and learning and is
deficient in Alzheimer's patients,"
she said. "Blocking the breakdown
helps patients keep more
acetylcholine in the brain."
The medication is taken once a
day and has few side effects.
"Less than 10 percent of all the
patients studied had to stop taking
it because of side effects," Doody
said. "Mild side effects included
nausea, diarrhea and vomiting that
often went away on their own."
While it cannot stop the
progression or make a patient return
to normal, Doody feels the
treatment will be beneficial to a
great number of patients.
"With the improvement of
symptoms or just the slowing of
decline, Aricept brings and
improved outlook for many patients
and their families," she said. "This
is not a cure, but it may provide
relief while we await a definitive
treatment for Alzheimer's."
An open letter to the City of
Rio Grande City
To The City of Rio Grande:
In regards to opinions about
Avasolo and Flores Streets, I
sincerely believe that making them
into one-ways is bad for citizens
and businesses alike.
The first thing is that Avasolo is
not equipped to handle heavy traffic
and their loads, and besides that the
drainage is not ample. Secondly,
since you have control of Channel
Two, it would be only right to
announce your meetings at least
one month in advance so that the
public can have the choice of
whether to attend or not.
We would like to know why
there is 70 percent of the city
workforce living in Mexico and
working here? This is odd to say
the least and just perhaps not right.
In continuing, do you all remember
the 60's and 70's and the decorations
that were put up around town? This
is the 90's and we do pay more
taxes, so why arc the decorations
less noticeable?
Those Season's Greetings and the
Shop Rio First do not compare
with the street bells, candles and
candy canes that were put up by
Americans. Somehow we need
"our" own people working for Rio
and not those from other cities or
countries.
Remember when the election to
make Rio a city took place? You
all picked a Saturday when the
County Fair was going on and
when Wal-Mart had its grand
opening. It seems that you
manipulated this election when the
least amount of voters would have
time to get out.
This election was won with a
mere 25 percent of the vote, what
happened to the other 75 percent? Is
this fair? Is it right? And now you
find yourselves asking for the
support of the very citizens you
tricked? And is that not ignoring
public sentiment?
If you want to make the city

Did You Know?
better there are some problems that
need to be looked into, like the
dangers wailing to happen at the
Texaco and Humble oil companies
right here in town! The city should
move to eject these menacing
problems out of the city limits.
Remember that close call some
years ago? The city government
should be honest to its citizens, it
should be straightforward, the
people do not deserve to be lied to
and then perhaps the support you
seek will surface.
Thank you,
A concerned citizen
