Members and guests of the
Florence J. Scott Study Club
enjoyed an award-winning program
presented by member Olga
Gonzalez at the club's regular
meeting in March.
Mrs. Gonzalez's program, "How
to Plan a Family Reunion," won
first place in the South Texas
District TFWC in the Outstanding
Americanism Day division. It will
now compete at state.
Patriotism was the central
theme of her family's reunion, and
the family veterans were honored at
a special ceremony during the
event.
Mrs. Gonzalez created a
beautiful backdrop for her talk by
hanging a family quilt made by
family members of the Crisoforo
and Antonia Guerra Gonzalez
family.
This quilt and another featuring
the family tree were made especially
for the occasion of the reunion and
were raffled there to help pay for
reunion expenses.
The speaker also set up family
photograph displays which had been
set up at the very successful
reunion, held in the summer of
1998.
She wore the t-shirt worn by
members of the Gonzalez family.

designed their own t-shirt and chose
their own color.
Mrs. Gonzalez told how a
steering committee made up of
family members set the date and
began working on plans a year in
advance. They began a newsletter
and mailing list to keep everyone
updated as the plans developed.
The theme was to center around
honoring the veterans of the family,
so the colors red, white, and blue
were selected for the event.
She suggested some tips for
planning a successful reunion, as
follows: set the date and reserve a
meeting site early; appoint a
contact person for each branch of
the family; let committees do the
work; determine costs; send
invitations; consider individual
interests and provide activities for
each age group; and provide
mementos.
Mementos prepared for their
reunion included a family cookbook
featuring memories and pictures, a
program booklet, a pictograph, and
family crests.
Many photographs were also
taken during the reunion, and
publicity was provided to the news
media.
A talent show provided
entertainment and spotlighted the
many talents of the family
members.
The highlight of the program
was the recognition, family by
family, of the thirty-nine who had
served in the military, including
Desert Storm.
In a surprise presentation, the
sons of Crisoforo and Antonia
Guerra Gonzalez were presented
with their military medals, which
had been painstakingly and secretly
replaced and displayed appropriately
Hostesses for the meeting, held

delicious meal to members and
guests following the program
Guerra completes
Navy basic training
Navy Seaman Recruit Alejandro
Guerra, son of Juan J. and Delia
Guerra of 40 Rosario Street in Rio
Grande City, recently completed
U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit
Training Command, Great Lakes,
Illinois.
During the eight-week program,
Guerra completed a variety of
training which included classroom
study and practical instruction on
naval customs, first aid, fire
fighting, water safety and survival,
and shipboard and aircraft safety. An
emphasis is also placed on physical
fitness.
Guerra and other recruits also
received instruction on the Navy's
core values -- honor, courage and
commitment - and how to apply
them in their military performance
and personal conduct. Guerra joins
55,000 men and women who will
enter the Navy this year from all
over the country.
Men and women train together
from their first day in the Navy just
as they do abonrd ships and at
shore commands around the world.
To reinforce the team concept,
Guerra and other recruits also were
trained in preventing sexual
harassment and ensuring equal
opportunity.
