RGC trustees okay name, colors for new high school
RGCCISD PD swears in new officer
Officer Trinidad Lopez was sworn in on Jan. 18. 2009 by RGCCISD School Police Chief
Hernan Garza. He brings with him diverse law enforcement experience which he acquired
through a 12 year tenure with the Rio Grande City Police Department, where he began his
training as a Communications Officer, Patrol Officer and Detective. Officer Lopez also
worked for the McAllen Police Department as an Emergency Communications Specialist
and later on went to work briefly as an Investigator for Starr County. He has participated in
many causes throughout his law enforcement career such as Crime Stoppers, Toys for Tots,
and was in charge of the sex offenders registry. He has also had the opportunity to have
various public speaking engagements under his bell Trinidad has also volunteered as Santa
Claus during toy runs for underprivileged children He is married to Raquel Lopez and is
the proud father of three, Kivett Garza-(I3), Isis Alexis Lopez-(5). and Irinidad Lopez, Jr -
(2). Rio Grande City CISD Police Department is responsible for overseeing all school

Cuellar urges Valley citizens
to apply for Census jobs
Washington. D.C. On
Friday, Jan. 22.
Congressman Henry Cuellar
(TX-28) called upon Valley
citizens to apply for
thousands of local jobs with
the 2010 Census. Part-time
to full-time employment
opportunities are still
available ranging from 20-40
hours per week. All citizens
are encouraged to apply to
fill these local Census
positions between now and
April.
"Not only will these
workers help our counties
get an accurate Census count
this spring, but these jobs
will help create local
employment opportunities in
these tough economic
times." said Congressman
Cuellar
"By getiing an accurate
count this 2010 Census, we'll
help our communities get the
federal funding they need
which helps us here at
home."
The U.S. Census occurs
once every ten years to get
an accurate assessment of
the nation's population and
gathers other important
information. It also impacts
and influences how more
than S400 billion per year in
federal funding is distributed
to state, local and tribal
governments.
These new 2010 Census
jobs were created to ensure
local citizens help coordinate
Census participation along
the border. Average pay is
$8.00 to S24.00 per hour and
bilingual speakers are
Escobares gains $83,500
in Dolly relief funds
WASHINGTON. D C. -
Congressman Henry Cuellar
announced on Thursday,
Feb. 21 that $83,500 in
federal funding is on its way
for the City of Escobares to
assist with disaster recovery
from Hurricane Dolly which
hit the area in July 2008
The money came from the
U.S. Housing and Urban
Development Department
through the Texas
Department of Rural Affairs.
"The funding we are
announcing today is an
indication of the great
working relationship
between the federal
government and the City of
Escobares Small rural
communities should never
be overlooked by any
agency, and I applaud the
efforts of Mayor Noel
Escobar and the City
Commission for actively-
seeking these funds," said
Congressman Cuellar.
"Working collaboratively
with officials in Escobares,
we were able to secure the
funds, which will have a
tremendous impact in the
lives of those who will
benefit from these
improvements."
The city will use the
federal funds to repair South
San Julian Street and Salinas
Avenue from Old Highway
83 to Juan Naranjo in an

especially needed. Positions
range from Census clerks to
supervisors.
Interested applicants can
call the 2010 Census Office
toll-free at 1 (866) 861-2010
which will connect them to
their nearest Census office.
Applicants need to be U.S.
Citizens and at least 1 8 years
of age. They are also
required to have a valid
driver's license and access to
use of a vehicle. Students,
retirees, community leaders,
job seekers and full-time
workers are encouraged to
apply.

Essential Fair
meeting set
for Jan. 27
There will be a meeting
this Wednesday, January 27,
at 4:00 p.m. at the Starr
County Extension Office,
500 N Britton Ave. on top
of the hill behind the
courthouse. Guidelines and
schedules for the following
Starr Count) Fair events will
be discussed and distributed:
Baking, Decorated Baking,
Adult and Youth Arts and
Crafts, Clothing,
Educational Posters, and the
Queen's Pageant.
All group leaders—4-11.
FFA, FCCLA, Scouts,
Senior Centers, and other
organizations, please make
every effort to attend or send
a representative to the
meeting. If you have any
questions, please call the
Extension Office at 487-
2306.
At their regular monthly
meeting on Tuesday evening,
Jan. 19, the Rio Grande
City CISD board of trustees
voied to approve the name
and colors for the new high
school in the Alto Bonito
area, and also voted io give
Grulla-area stuJciiis the
opportunity to select the
school mascot.
The name "RGCCISD
Grulia High School" was
approved by the board.
Board President Basilio D.
Villarreal, Ji explained,
"RGCCISD Grulia High
School has been decided on
by the board. The common
name will likely be Grulia
High School. Grulia schools
have a rich history. There
was actually a Grulia High
School a number of years
ago."
Blue and white were
approved as the new
school's colors. Villarreal
noted. "Those were the
colors when ihe school
existed many years ago."
The board also took action
concerning the new high
school's mascot. Villarreal
declared, "We will get 10
people, five students from
(he Grulia area and five
people who will work in the
new school, to come up with
three names."
The board president
continued, "The (three)
names will be presented to
' all students projected to
attend the new school. The
students will vote on the
new mascot. If is essential
that the students of that area
have some involvement in
this historical event."
The trustees also voted at
the meeting to table the
matter of new high school
attendance zones for the time
being.
After their executive
session, the trustees took
several actions. Abei
Gonzalez, Jr. was given a
five-year contract to be the
first head football coach at
the new Grulia high school.
Gonzalez, a star RGC High
quarterback in the late 1990's
who later excelled on the
gridiron at Texas A&M
University-Kingsville, has
been the Rio Grande City
Rattlers' Offensive
Coordinator for the past
severat years.
Dr Pablo Martinez was
named the principal at the
new Grulia high school.
Adolfo Pena was selected to
be the new principal at Rio
Cirande City High School.
Villarreal noted, "Jorge
Recio, the current RGC
High Principal, will be
moving to administration to
assist the Superintendent.
The district's tremendous
growth makes it essential for
the Superintendent to have
this type of assistance."
The trustees approved Pay
Application No. 23 from
Leyendecker Construction,
Inc. for the new high school.
Villarreal stressed, "The new
school is going according to
plan. The entire facility
should be complete in June
or July. Many of the
buildings should be complete
in late March or early April."
The trustees approved
Change Orders No. 5 and 6
from Leyendecker
Construction involving the
new high school. The board
president explained, "The
change orders involve
changing the second floor
ceilings for three buildings.

Starr County Fair Parade
set for Saturday, Feb. 27
"A Good ol' Starr Countv
Roundup" is the theme for
the 2010 Starr County Fair
parade, which will be on
Saturday morning, February
27, at 10:00 a.m., with
lineup once again taking
place on South Britton
Avenue and along Water
Street
The JROTC Twelfth
Cavalry Memorial Unit from
Rio Grande City High
School will proudly carry
the colors, and Parade
Marshal Emma Gonzalez
will be featured at the
forefront.
i he 2010 Starr County
Fair Queen and her court, to
be crowned on Sunday,
February 21, will be riding
on the Queen's float
sponsored by the Starr
County Fair Association
Board of Directors.
The parade will once again
proceed east on Main to
historic Fort Ringgold
The City of Rio Grande
City and TXDOT are asking
that no vehicles park on the
north side of Main Street
along the parade route so
that emergency vehicles may
come through if necessary.
Lineup for the parade
begins at 8:00 a.m.. and pre-
registration is not required.
The fee of $20 per vehicle
and/or float is payable the
morning of the parade
Entry numbers may be
obtained from Parade
Chairman Tissa Peterson at
the USPS mailbox on South
Britton Avenue next to the
Compass Drive-In Bank.
All floats and vehicles
should line up on Water
Street facing toward Britton
Avenue. Walking groups
will line up on the median of
South Britton. Bands and
JROTC will line up as
before on the Britton
Avenue median north of
Main Street.
Judging of floats and
decorated vehicles will begin
at 9:00. There will be
money prizes for the top
floats in the youth category
and rosette ribbons in the
commercial category .
Out-of-county entries,
horses, and marching
groups, including bands, are
encouraged to participate
free of charge.
In order that the parade
focus on Starr County youth,
political entries are not

RMS stndents involved in law panel
Ringgold Middle School Students participated in a panel discussion with members of the
Law community. The Guidance Department at Ringgold Middle School holds career
panels periodically to give students an opportunity to ask questions to the presenters. The
panels are held in different occupations allowing students to get information on different
career choices.
