Our Opportunity-Oar Dnty-Our Hope
For the New Year
SERIOUS in thought we stand on the
threshold of this New Year. Crave respon-
sihilitiea have fallen upon us during tha year juat
put. We are a nation at war.
The weeks stretch out ahead of us like the un-
cut pages of a book. None may know what it
written therein.
Only this we know. It is given to us to prove
aa never before what manner of people we are. It is
ariveu to every man woman and child to eerve oiir cuuntrr
with body brain and heart. It la Riven lo ua to live In a time
when ahaJlowneaa and droaa fall from ua hi.' a mantle and
we stand revealeoV ulraoat tu a man slniil. hearted in de-
votion to our Flaar.
Many have gone to fight in France. Some will
not return. By land and aea and sky our boy are de-
fending our Fia and upholding the spirit or democracy.
Not all of us however may fight in France or
nurse the ick and wounded in foreign field. Moat of
ua muet aerve In laaa valorous ways at home. May each and
vary one of ua rendar that serviré lo the uttormoet. May
we slva unaparlnaly of all we have and are. and may our
self-denial no leaa than the work of our handa further
tha desvirad end.
With outstretched hand and deep-stirred heart
we extend our New Year' greeting. May the year of
HIS bring to the Alllad Natlona ati early and victorious peace.
