Lazarus a 'very,
very good fit',
Board chairman says
by Meghan Kuckelman
Editor in Chief
The Board of Trustees named Dr. Francis Lazarus
the seventh president of the University of Dallas last
week.
Lazarus, 59, is currently vice president for aca-
demic affairs and provost at the University of San
Diego, a Catholic liberal arts school in California.
He has taught previously at the United States Mili-
tary Acadamy at West Point and Salem College, and
held administrative positions at Salem College, the
University of Dayton, and Marquette University He
will officially take over the position of president July
1.
In a meeting with faculty to announce the selec-
tion of the new president, Lazarus said he has felt a
strong attraction to the UD curriculum and its Catho-
lic foundation from his first introduction to the
school.
"The fit between my own academic roots, my
own personal values, and the roots and values of
this institution are so congruent that the attraction
was instantaneous and complete," he said.
Harry Longwell, chairman of the Board of Trust-
ees, said Lazarus was offered the presidency because
he was a "very, very good fit," and cited evidence
of this fit in Lazarus' "in-depth knowledge of
what.. .the University of Dallas is about in terms of
its Core Curriculum, its outstanding faculty, and the
student body."
Manuel Zuniga, alum and chairman of the search
committee, said he thinks Lazarus will take the uni-
versity into a new era.
"In my opinion, we couldn't have chosen a bet-
ter representative of the university," he said. "We
are true Catholics in the best sense of that word,
Frank Lazarus is that. I believe you will all agree
this man will take the university to new heights. I
am totally convinced today is the beginning of a
new era at this university"
Lazarus met with students and faculty in March
while the search for the president was still under-
way
Lazarus spoke then about budget issues, the
strength of the Core, UD's Catholic identity, and
his plans for the first 100 days on the job. Lazarus
reiterated several of these points, both in his meetings

It's hard to have home-team loyalty when your
home changes every two or three years.
An avid baseball fan who has moved 14 times in
the last 36 years, Dr. Francis Lazarus, UD's new
president, for lack of a real home-team, calls him-
self a "National League fan."
Despite all the moves, Lazarus said his move to
Dallas this summer with his wife will put him in
the same city as relatives for the first time in 14
years. No mean feat for a man with 11 siblings and
nearly 40 nieces and nephews.
The frequent moves have been an enriching ex-
perience, Lazarus said.
"We've more than gained an understanding about
the diversity of the country and the wonderful vari-
ability, the variety of the people you interact with,"
he said.
Lazarus and his wife Cathy, whom he met in the
third grade, plan on house-hunting in the immedi-
ate area over the next few months.
Lazarus said it was more than the promise of an
easy commute that encouraged him to reside in the
neighborhood surrounding UD.
"I like being on campus a lot. I would hope to
come back in the evening for on-campus activities,"
he said.
Lazarus hopes his interaction with students will
not be limited to showing up at campus events, how-

HR finds alternate funding for student workers
by Rebecca Leland
News Editor
Student employees will receive funds
for the remainder of the spring semester
as the university draws upon department,
government, and alternate funding re-
sources, Amber Sizemore, Human Re-
sources coordinator said.
Although a review of the budget for the
student employment program indicated
that program funds would be depleted
before the end of the semester, individual
departments, Financial Ad, and univer-
sity administration worked with the Hu-

man Resources department to create and
implement an alternate plan.
Shelia Hyde, director of Human Re-
sources, identified one source of funding.
"Many departments have been very
generous in offering to contribute their
own funds to help meet their students' fi-
nancial needs and keep vital campus ser-
vices running," she said.
The departments unable to take over
their students" salaries are being assisted
by Financial Ad. Financial Ad identi-
fied those students who qualified for al-
ternate funding in the form of a Supple-
mental Educational Opportunity Grant
(SEOG).
"We are using the grant funds to re-
place the salaries of eligible students,
which is a win-win alternative. It reduces
the amount of funds the student employ-
ment program needs to finish the semes-
ter and students still receive the money
they would have earned," Sizemore said.
