Presidential candidates complete campus visits
Keefe: UD has unique core message
but needs help sharing it
Heather Nelson
Managing Editor
Presidential candidate Thomas
Keefe met with representatives
from Student Government, the
Braniff Graduate Student Association
and the University News on Nov. 13.
Keefe started with a warning. "I
have a tendency to tell long stories
as explanations, so if you get bored,
nod off," he said before describing his
undergraduateeducation at Benedictine
College, a small Catholic liberal arts
college. "It was like Dorothy opened
the door to Oz. I traveled to Europe
with the men's chorus and sang, I was
on the rugby team, I was on the football
team, I was in every school play we
had. I had a wonderful time in college
I majored in history. I took every history
course they offered," he said.
Keefe then went to law school,
which he didn't like because it was a
trade school. He practiced law for a
while and then worked as a marketing
executive at West Publishing Co. He
quit his job at West to work for Drake
University as a gift officer.

Penley: UD needs to work on its
coherent story'
Heather Nelson
Managing Editor
Dr. Larry Penley, University of
Dallas presidential candidate,
met with representatives from
the Student Government Executive
Council, the Braniff Graduate Student
Association and The University News
on Nov. 10.
Penley was first asked about his
previous role as president of Colorado
State University, and he replied, "I'm
very proud of what we accomplished
at Colorado State under my leadership,
so there's really a whole set of
accomplishments that I think speak for
themselves. We increased the number
of freshmen; we increased the number
of honors students by more than 40
percent; we doubled fundraising to
$300 million in five years."
Penley then went on to describe
CSU and UD as "very substantially
different."
He said, at UD, "the degree to
which you can create a perspective, a
critical thinking perspective, through
the integration of that [liberal arts]

University introduces
human sciences major
Katie Prejean
Contributing Writer
Earlier last week, students received
an e-mail announcing the addition
of a new major to be offered at the
University of Dallas. Reactions were varied
as students were informed that UD will
now be offering a major and concentration
in "Human Sciences in the Contemporary
World/'
According to Dr. Dennis Sepper of the
philosophy department, faculty have been
introducing and discussing the concept
of this addition for almost 10 years.

Universities, "Ex Corde Ecclesiae," which
is a highly respected document put into
practice at the University, clearly calls

for "an intellectual engagement with the
contemporary world by calling upon
human and social sciences that were not
part of the UD curriculum," according to
Sepper.
In 2002, an initial concept of the
major was introduced to the curriculum
committee, and in 2006, the plan was
fully developed and approved. The faculty
senate gave approval in 2007, and now,
preparations are being made to offer the
concentration beginning in the Fall of
2010.
A detailed description of the major is
being sent out to interested students, and
the document clearly outlines what this
program focuses on, how concepts will
be presented and why it is necessary to
