President Thomas Keefe to be inaugurated Friday
Gabbi Chee
Managing Editor
Thomas Keefe has spent six
months striking a balance
between introducing
changes to the University
of Dallas and remaining true to the
essential nature of the institution.
Keefe will be inaugurated as the
eighth president of the University
during the Mass of the Holy Spirit on
Friday, Sept. 1 0. The celebration will
begin at 4 p.m. in the Church of the
Incarnation with Bishop Kevin Farrell
of the Diocese of Dallas presiding.
The Mass will be simulcast in Gorman
Classroom B in case space runs out.
A reception featuring live music by
student bands and refreshments
will follow on the mall for the entire
University community.
When it comes to change, Keefe
has been a catalyst most noticeably
for aesthetic improvements to the
campus. The look of the campus
is an indication of the University's
attitude about itself, he said. "It
reflects the pride that we have of
the whole enterprise. I want people
to know that we're proud." The
campus has already seen numerous
improvements over the past few
months, with many more on the
way.
Keefe also wants to change
UD's reputation of being one of
the best-kept secrets in Catholic
higher education: He wants to
spread the word. "Right now, the
general population doesn't know
us. They know Harvard, they know
Stanford, but they don't know
the University of Dallas. And it's
incumbent upon me to make sure
that they do," Keefe said. "It's now
our opportunity to thrive, and that
requires more people providing
more resources to the institution.

statement holds true after

Student Government executive board
excited to start 'new chapter'

The executive board
of University of
Dallas' Student
Government is more
excited than ever for the
upcoming year. With both
a new school president and
dean of student life, changes
are already taking place.
"We're a new kind of
executive council," said
Natalie Koch, VP of Student
Programming.
Chris Burton, Senate
Treasurer, agreed, saying,
"it's a new chapter."
What's so new about it? For
one thing, the new president
of the University, Thomas
Keefe, is very eager to get
involved with SG and help put
into practice the suggestions
that it proposes. He meets
with SG once a month and is
always available outside of
those meetings as well.
"There's a new dynamic
between the students and the
administration," said Theresa
Smart, Senate Secretary.
Burton agreed, saying, "He
wants us to come up and say
'hey, we need these changes."
According to Nico
Montoya, VP of the Senate,
this "opens a huge door for
the senators." They are not
just doing petty tasks, he said,
but truly acting as the liaison
between the students and the
administration,
Madison Milliken, SG
President, couldn't stress
enough the energetic attitude
they all felt towards the new
school year. He said that
Keefe and the new dean of
student life, Joe Cassidy,
were always asking for his
opinion on changes that were
occurring around campus, like
the colorful umbrellas on the
mall or switching from Dish
Network to Direct TV in the
Rathskeller.
Milliken said of Keefe:
"He's relying on us to be his
scope into the students,"
which, according to Smart,
"holds the executive board to
a higher standard."
With their renewed role,
Milliken said that transparency
and openness between SG and
the student body is one of his
top goals.
