There has been a resurgent interest in family histories in the last
two decades. Many people are tracing their family lines through
genealogy; others are helping to compile family stories through
county histories. These accounts of people within the counties
make good, entertaining reading, adding a permanence to family
names; they give invaluable aid to the genealogists in their
difficult research.
County histories are intended to reflect those people, conditions,
attitudes and habits that demonstrate the beginnings,
growth and continuing progress of communities over this
Nation. The Historical Commission of Hutchinson County
authorized a compilation of stories concerning the County in
April of 1978.
Stories that have been submitted demonstrate a colorful
County, from its meager beginnings around 1876 to the great
oil rush of 1926. We also see the progression forward into
greater ranching, farming and industrial interests.
Hutchinson County has had many transient families who have
moved in and out of the County many times according to
changes in their jobs. There are others who have remained
steadily in the County over a much longer period of years and
weathered the trials and tribulations of all of the changes in their
communities.
We are grateful to all individuals and families who have contributed
their stories, in such a way that they have helped this History
come alive for future generations to read and relive. Our book is greatly enriched because of these wonderful
accounts.
We regret some stories will not be included in the book because
they were not submitted. However, the ideal of a one hundred
percent contribution is never reality. Those who are absent will
truly be missed.
Various people have come and gone and worked on the book at
different intervals. The work has been interesting, tedious and
often difficult. Looking beyond the mire, we could envision the
worthiness of the project two years ago. We have not been disappointed
and hope you will feel the same.
The guiding light in all of this has been Mrs. Carroll (Rosa
White) Pace. A book of this magnitude requires patience, fortitude,
good judgment, diligence, an unfailing sense of humor,
diplomacy and, of course, preseverence to see it through. Mrs.
Pace has exercised all of these on a daily basis. Without her
unbelievable tenacity, this book would never have been completed.
As a professional woman with an office to maintain,
Rosa Pace has sacrificed many hours of her own, both private
as a wife and mother, and public as a practicing lawyer, to
devote to the completion of this history. During these two years,
she has maintained her sense of humor and her sanity in the
face of many odds; she has never complained, always attending
to the demands of deadlines regarding the book.
We are deeply grateful to Rosa Pace and to her brother, John
White, for the use of their office, their office staff, financial
assistance far above and beyond the call of duty and for their
total dedication to the Hutchinson County History Book.
The completion of the History Book has been a tremendous
accomplishment. The hours of labor involved in such a project
are too many to count. We have taken the past and present and
brought them together. From this year (1980), future generations
will be able to read about the beginnings and continued
growth of Hutchinson County with justifiable pride.
