15. MOTHER'S SECRET LOVE AFFAIR
by Neva Rich Pinkston
The fire in the fireplace crackled, and the young man stared
into the flames, oblivious to the intense heat or to any other
surroundings. He was lost in thought as his mind wandered
into the past to the family secret that his mother had recently
revealed to him.
He couldn't believe that he had heard those words, "I must
confess to a love affair," coming from his mother's mouth-his
mother, a Christian woman whose main concerns had always
been God and family; the mother who had been a college teacher
for twenty-one years and a high school teacher before he and
his three brothers were born; the woman who had been so active
in the community, receiving honors as Outstanding District
Teacher, Outstanding Community Woman, and Outstanding
Volunteer.
But he must face the fact: Mother said that she had had a
love affair which lasted for over twenty years. It had begun
even before she went to teach at Grayson County College when
it opened in 1965, for she met her love when she went to the
unbuilt campus to apply for a position as a business teacher.
She declared that it had been love at first sight for both of them
and that she had been willing to drive the thirty miles from home
