Swing me. Mommy, $he say$. Swing me high! Ai! the
way up to t)ie c!ouds, if you can!
! smi!c and say, "I can't; not that high, darling." But Stil!
I puslt t!tc swing and watch her soar skyward. Then she conies
back to earth again, giggling, " That time I nearly touched the
clouds, didn't I, Mommy?" 1 laugh and say, "Well—nearly,
perhaps."
I look down at her, and for a desperately tender moment !
wish that 1 could always keep that smile on her face, this laugh
in her voice, the happy conviction that she nearly touched the
clouds. Like all parents, I yearn to spare my child sorrow, anger,
hurt of every kind. I yearn to keep from her the knowledge that
none of us ever quite touch the clouds. And I know ! can't.
So I am thankful—more thankful than ever—for the Church,
and the lessons it is teaching her. None of us can give our chil-
dren perpetual sanctuary. But al! of us can help them find Faith.

TT IS ;iuite possible that the
worit) is better than the major-
ity uf people believe it is. When it
is considered that the wondrous
news media of the present bring
us daily reports from nearly
every quarter of the world an )
from multipiied millions of peo
pie, we did not hear from years
ago, the small percentage of
wrongdoers among the millions
of people over the world may not
eem so ominous.
JUST A THOUGHT:
'The eye will sometimes de
ceive; particularly if it is
turned in the direction of some
thing one realty doesn't want
to sec.
Let us also consider the fact
that the news media may bring
us evidences ofgoodness to block
out the stories of wrong. Think
of that coal-mine disaster in
which three men were trapped
300 feet under the earth, how
it drew many neighbors and
friends to labor day and nigitt
for the rescue. Aside from spe-
cial incidents which might be
mentioned further, consider the
agencies of assistance and heal-
ing that are employed around the
earth, such as the Red Cross and
the missionary establishments of
the different churches.
So let us thank God that the sit-
uation with ourselves and the
world is as welt as it is. There is
a story of Booker T. Washington
to the effect that he was speaking
about pessimism one day when
one of his hearers took a vague
view of pessimism but assured
Brother Washington that he
wasn't so sure about as pessimist
but in the fall, when the sweet
potatoes were in the bin. and the
frost was on the fields, he was a
POSSUM1ST. Let us be Possum-
ists all the while.
