Nominations of steers for the
Ranch to Rail program will be ac-
cepted until September 15. A
minimum of five head from each
ranch will be accepted. Cattle
must be delivered October 3-4,
said Dr. Ted McCollum, Texas Co-
operative Extension livestock
specialist. Producers may choose
to feed their cattle in South Texas
at the Hondo Creek Cattle Co. in
Edroy or at the Double A
Feedyard in Clayton, N.M. Texas
and New Mexico Cooperative Ex-
tension are collaborating on the
latter study. The program helps
ranchers determine how their cat-
tle fit into the beef industry,
McCollum said. For a fee of $10
per head, ranchers receive infor-
mation on their steers' feedyard
performance, financial profitabil-
ity and carcass: traits, he said.
"Ranch reports provided by
Ranch to Rail allow producers to
assess their current breeding pro-
grams and make changes if neces-
sary to position themselves for
the future." Steers should weigh
between 500 and 850 pounds upon
arrival to the feedyard. Ranchers
may deliver their own cattle or
combine truckloads with other
consignors from their region.
McCullom strongly recom-
mended that all steers entering
the program be vaccinated in ac-
cordance with one of the Value
Added Calf management pro-
grams. Further information and
nominations forms are available
by contacting McCullom at
(806)677-5600 or Dr. Joe Paschal
of Corpus Christi, Extension live-
stock specialist, at (361) 265-9203.
Forms also may be downloaded at

METCALFE MUSEUM
Durham, OkblMima
The village of Durham,
Oklahoma, is situated on a ridge
above the Canadian River and the
Washita River valleys. When rain
falls on Durham, the drops that
fall on the north run to the Cana-
dian and the drops to the south to
the Washita. Not far from the fa-
mous Antelope Hills, Durham was
on both the California Road and
the DCD (Denver, Canadian, Dal-
las) Road. It was a busy little vil-
lage in the early part of the 20th
century with blacksmiths, three
barber shops (haircuts '!5c: and
shave 150), a cream station, flour
mill, two cotton gins, 300 children
enrolled in the school and a filling
station for those new cars.
The following story was told by
Howard Metcalfe: On a Sunday
■we were visiting the Andrew
Wiieys. I was standing in
Brewers garage when an older
couple drove wpfrom California%
They had a large car, about 1920
model. It had a round gasoline
tank bolted (clanip) between the
rear springs. The gas tank had
started to leak. Mr. Brewer had a
new man, I do not know his name.
He took the gas tank off poured
out the gasoline in a container.
He started to solder the leak with
a carbine torch When he got it
partly soldered the whole end of
the tank blew out and bit the wall
of the shop. The service man had
screwed the cap back on the tank
before he started solderi ng. There,
was the old co uple, no gas tank, no
repairs. How they got to going
again I do not know. Strange
things have happened in Dur-
ham■) Oklahoma!
Durham will celebrate "Dur-
ham Daze" Saturday, September
13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday,
September 14, 1-5 p.m. The Mu-
seum will open a new exhibit
showing newly framed watercol-
ors by Augusta Metcalfe and a
Navajo rug exhibit from a private
collection. Other events in the
area include a quilt show in the
Durham Community Building;
Turkey Creek Vineyards wine
tasting at the vineyard; and
square-dancing exhibitions.
Lunch will be available on both
days at both the Hitchin' Post Tex-
aco Station and the Durham Com-
munity Center.
Hours of the Museum, which is
located near Durham, Oklahoma,
are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday
through Saturday, March 1 through
November 30. You can contact the
Museum at (580) 655-4467 or
