Eleven students from the Winton Academy of
Art traveled to the Oklahoma City Museum of
Ait March 10 to view the full-length Portrait of
George Washington painted in 1796 by Gilbert
Stuart, in the last years of Washington's presi-
dency. The exhibition, "George Washington: A
National Treasure," was organized and circu-
lated by the National Portrait Gallery, Smithso-
nian Institution to celebrate its acquisition of the
work in 2000. The acquisition of the portrait was
funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation,
which is also underwriting the tour of the por-
trait and the educational components. The mu-
seum was chosen as one of only eight venues
across the country.
Accompanying the portrait were kiosks, vid-
eos, an original letter by Washington to the art-
ist, and other 18th and 19th Century paintings,
engravings, prints, sculptures, decorative arts,
documents, weapons and currency. The exhibit
focused on various artists' interpretations of
Washington's life, accomplishments and legacy,
as well as the cultural context of the Revolution-
ary War period.
The Winton Academy of Art tour of this ex-
hibit was partially funded by the Canadian Arts
Alliance and several individual donors. The stu-
dents have studied the Revolutionary War pe-
riod and the Gilbert Stuart portrait in their art
classes at the Academy in preparation for the
tour. One class of student artists painted individ-
ual sections of the painting and then put them to-
gether to make a full copy of the portrait.
Students making the tour were Ryan Alexan-
der, Mitchell and Kate Abraham, Emmett and
Elliott Webb, Susie and Quincy Webb, Kelby
Price, Kade Johnson, and Keaton Dodd. Adults
accompanying the studentswere Frankie Hamil-
ton, Arlene Walker, Amy Winton, and her assis-
tant, Ryan Koch.
The exhibition will be at the Oklahoma Mu-
seum of Art until April 9 in the Donald W.
Reynolds Visual Arts Center at 415 Couch Drive*
in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Art students of Amy Winton (photo right) pose beneath a composite of
the Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart that they studied in
preparation for a trip to Oklahoma City where they saw the original
work in the exhibition, "George Washington: A National Treasure."
The young artists created their version by painting individual sections of
the portrait and then assembling them. Pictured are: (standing, l-r)

Emmett Webb, Ryan Alexander, Elliott Webb, and Mitch Abraham.
Amy Winton's assistant Ryan Koch (photo below left), a percussionist
with the CHS Wildcat Band, is shown with a revolutionary war drum
from 1761 passed down from Winton's ancestor, Isaac Gorharn. The
drum was part of a study Winton *s art students undertook of the era in
preparation for a field trip to see the Portrait of George Washington by
Gilbert Stuart (photo below right).
