THEIR RAID ON WAKE ISLAND BIGGEST OF WAR
Chicago, Jail. C. (AP) — Six
persons were killed and more
than 100 injured in ii fire and exr
plosion in a bowline alley on the
far South Side shortly before last
midnight. Many of the 200 pa-
trons who escaped, to the street
were blown through doors by the
force of the blast.
The sixth .body, that of Joseph
R. Bingham', 41, wos recovered
from the ruins today more than
eight hours after the blaze start-
ed. ' Fire Marshal Anthony Mul-
laney estimated the damage at
$150,000. -
, One of the bodies was identified
as William Gutrich, Id, son of a
policeman who had been reported
missing.
In the Little Company of Mary
hospital where 35 victims were
taken for treatment, 27 were held
all night With at least seven re-
ported in a critical condition.
The fire burned for several
hours and damage was estimated
by /Fire Marshal Anthony Mul-
luncy at 5150.000.
The five bodies were foiyid hud-
dled in the wreckage oi a wash-
room. Marshal Mullaney said
their escape apparently had been
cut off by the flames and they1
had sought safety in the wash-
room, but had asphyxiated.
Tentative identifications of four
of the bodies indicated they all
were residents of the general vi-
cinity of the bowling alley.
Eyewitnesses said some smoke
"had appeared in the rear of the
alleys and had been followed by
tongues of flame. Many of the
patrons started for the exits —
three in number — but many
stopped at the checkroom to re-
cover hats and coats.
Suddenly there was a searing
blast of. hot air and flarnc, those
who felt it said they were pushed
through the front doors and into
the street. Some said they heard
-a muffled explosioni others had
heard nothing.
Firemen said the blast probably
■Was a "flareback" caused by ig-
nition of the heated gases.
At the hospital, rooms were
quickIjf Tilled with the injured
and many lay in the halls on
stretchers. Sister Mary Leo, su-
perintendent, said many were
treated for minor burns and cuts
without a record being made of!
it. Taverns and drug stores near I
