RESOLUTIONS
1968; later that year, he won the Hawaiian Open; in 1970, he won twice,
taking the leading money winning title and the Vardon Trophy for the
lowest stroke average on the tour; his 1971 U. S. Open title qualified
him for an exclusive club of players who have taken two national Open
titles; and
WHEREAS, The personality, style, and competitive spirit of this
amazing man have captured the fancy of golfing millions throughout the
entire world: in this year's U. S. Open, he defeated famed golfer, Jack
Nicklaus, 68-71, in a dramatic and colorful 18-hole playoff for the
championship; in a similar performance at the British Open, Lee cap-
tured the imagination of fans with his exciting playing, closing the match
with a birdie 4; and
WHEREAS, The generosity of this fine man has earned him the re-
spect of people from all walks of life: in 1968 he donated $10,000 of his
Hawaiian Open purse to set up a trust fund for the children of the late
Ted Makalena, a fellow pro and great friend; this year he has donated
nearly $5,000 of his British Open purse to English orphans; and
WHEREAS, The exploits and many achievements of Lee Trevino have
brought great honor to his country and to the State of Texas; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the State of Texas,
the Senate concurring, That the 62nd Legislature, 2nd Called Session,
congratulate Lee Trevino on his wonderful success and commend him on
his many contributions to professional golf; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this Resolution be prepared for
Lee Trevino as an expression of appreciation from the Texas Legislature
for the service he has rendered to the people of Texas through his
phenomenal achievements.
