man called Jack Collins, sup-
posed to bo a horse thief, were
at or near Mr. York's residence,

designated, where they remain-
ed until about noon on Satur-
day, when 'their patient vigils
were rewarded by the appear-

took into custody. Saturday
afternoon Deputy Slieiilf Hall
heard of a suspicious chnractei
at the residence of Mr. Norvel,
in Throckmorton county, four
miles, from here, and calling
Ranger Birdwell to, his 'assist-
ance, they proceeded to Mr.
Norvel's residence, and took in
the representative of the numer
ous family of Smith. Alt of the
culprits were lodged in jail at
Albany next day.
Mr. Norvel was arrested on
strong evidence of giving aid
and comfort to criminals by liar-
boring them and furnishing
them arms and provisions. He
was conveyed to Throckmorton,
and a hearing had before 'Squire

Were bemoaning their 'ate, that
their lots were cast in this good
for-nothing couutry, where vege-
table gardens are a fail ure, tlie
Echo published two or three
communications from Judge
Stribling on the subject of gar-
dening. The judge said he be-
lieved vegetables would gjow
and do well here if they had the
ghost of a chance, and he pro-
posed to do as be had often
done before, prepare a piece ol
ground for a vegetable gardeii
and raise thereon all the gieen
stuff hist family required. Yes
terday morning Judge Stribling,
brought to this office a bunch ot
radishes—three varieties ; a
a bunch of onions, several toma-
toes, peppers, okra, egg plant
and asparagus, all of them tine'
specimens. Hu has eight hun-
dred cabbage, has a bed of
horse-radish which is doing
jly, and in their season had
plenty of peas, string and snap
beans, lettuce, etc. Gardeu
truck to ill grow here, and in
abundance, if the ground i pro-
perly prepared and cultivated.
In fact, nearly every kind of
farm product does well with
proper attention. Let croakers
follow the example of the judge,
and next year have a good gar-
den, it will pay.
-—The chmate of this country
has, on a fair trial, proven to be
bad for the constitution of mur-
derers atod horse and cattle
thieves, quite a number of them
have been given elevated posi-
tions on a tree. Because Cap
•tain Aldington's company of
rangers have been seat farther
to tb> front it is no sigii the cli-
mate—-or the tenrtJSr of the in-
habitants—has changed. Bad
men of all classes are not want-
ed nor will they be tolerated in
this community The so-called
"tin hat brigade" is not dead
but slumbering. It did some
good work, and if thieved, mur-
derers and their aiders and
abettors do not steal1 clear of
this ountry, the brigade may
again awaken and start another
