PIANOS.
We would recommcnd
those who desire purchasing Pianos
or Organs 10 seitu direct to Thos.
Goggaa & Bio., of Galveston. It is
muc l better for those who desire to
purchase to deal directly with a
house like that of Goggan & liro.,
that is known to be perfectly respon-
sible, than it is with the drummers
who cover the state, sell instruments
at. larger prices than Goggan &
Bro. charge, and then are none—
not to be found when the Piano and
guarantee alike are valueless. The
above firm will sell I'ianos on month-
ly installments' to responsible par-
ties.

The experiment has been tried,

produces arl excellent quality of

*it ;
If our mails continue to be de-
layed, and, in consequence, we
are cut off from all knowledge of
tho doings ot the Legislature—as
we were ot the constitutional con-
vention—we are in favor of the
county court meeting and acting
under the organic law, in the mut-
ter of working streets and public
roads. We cannot afford to wait
much longer for a law under which
to act iu this matter. We could
do very well as long as we were
clinging to the hope of having
them M-ork'.-i by a tax upon the
citizens, but as that hope is re-
moved, We are becoming nervous
about it.
Tho r.ewly elected officers srera
enthusiastic in their efforts to
perform their whole duty. And
if we are not incorrect in our
judgment, ii stands the unruly
in hand to "shuu the appearand*
of evil." But the spirit seems to
be infections, and the same dis-
ease Is taking hold upon the
citizens, and they will uo doubt
see that the o'fleers also "walk a
chalk." At least wo hope that
this may be the ease; for wo aro
satisfied that if there had been a
more earnest effort on tho part of
both officers and citizens, to sec
kthat the laws were faithfully
--At .executed, there would hove been
I «i-itne and greater prosperity
Sikitffe ' ■,|H1 over the State.
Contrary to our expectations
and suggestions, stated iu last is-
sue, the Sunday school aud Tem-
perance council will not consoli-
date their "'pic nics."' So, as at
first determined on, the Sabbath
school will have a May Day cele-
bration, on Monday, the 1st of
May, including a pic nic among
other things, aud the council will
have a pic nic on Saturday t he 5th
of May ; at which times every-
body is invited to attend, aud re-
quested to bring his lunch, to be
added to the general stock as com-
munity property for the occasion.
Wc would right here take occasion
to say, that the two organizations
are in a very flourishing condition,
and are 110 doubt accomplishing
much good. We see but one thing
lacking now to make our Sabbath
school a magnificent success, and
that is the attendance of parents—
heads of families—manifesting a
personal and individual interest
in the succcks of the school. If
they do iiot feel disposed to take
part in the exercises, let them be
iu attendance, and encourage by
their presence. The Temperance
council is taking ill new members
at almost every meeting, and the
attei.dimcc is generally large.
Well, let us have a gay and,
lively time the lirst week in May
—the time of all other times most
suitable for mirthful festivities.
CONSUMPTION UUKED !
An old physician, retired from
active practice, havng had placed in
his hands by an Kast India missionary
the formula of a simple Vegetable
Remedy, for the speedy and perma-
nent Cure of Consumption, Ilron-
chitis, Catarrh, Asthma, and all
Throat and Lung Affections, also a
Positive and Radical cure for
Nervous Debility and all Nervous
Comuiaints,after having thoroughly
tested its wonderful curative powers
in thousands of cases, feels it nis
duty to make it known to his suffer-
ing fellows. Actuated by this
motive, and a conscientious desire
to relieve human suffering, he will
send (free «f chitrt; ) to all who
desire it, this recipe, with full direc-
tions for preparing and successfully
using. Sent by return mail by
addressing with stamp,naming this
paper.

the march op reason.
There are certain pretended
philosophers and wiseacres who,
when you speak to then-, of the
progress of mankind, shake their
heads and talk of the good old days
before steam was applied and the
Morse telegraph invented. Away
with such hu:"bug! The great
discoveries which have enriched
mankind; united by a wire link
great nations separated by mighty
seas, dwarfed space With speed, and
reduceil disease to its minimum,
cannot by any exercise of ingenuity
be demonstrated to be aught but
blessings.
Among the sanatory discoveries
of tRe nineteenth century is one, that
in view of the salutary influence it
has exerted, deserves a foremost
place. We allude to Hostetter's
Stomach Bitters, which is one of the
most deservedly celebrated tonics
and alteratives of the present day.
'Hie most unimpeachable establishes
the fact that this popular medicated
stimulant aud corrective annihilate
indigestion, constipation, urinary
complaints, malarial disorders, and
m?.ny affections of the sensitive
organs. In the mining regions and
new clearings ot tho West, it is
regarded L>y the inhabitants as an
indispensable means of preventing,
as well as curing chills and fever,
and there is scarcely a city or town
in the union, some of whose deni-
zens have not borne witness to its
efficacy in remedying the first named
class of maladies.
As an mvigorant, appetizer and
carminative, Hostetter's Hitters are
incomparably the most effective and
the purest, their basis of fine old
rye, the most healthful alcoholic
spirit obtainable, is of its self no
mean tonic, but its strengthening
properties are increased fifty fold by
the vegetable extracts which it holds
in solution, and to which the surpass-
ing quality of the Bitters are due.
