Bastrop County Chosen As Pilot
Area For Opening Therapy Program
The Department of Physical and
Health Education at the University
of Texas, in conjunction with
United Cerebral Palsy Association
of Texas, has designed a treatment
program for Hie several counties
.surrounding Travis County Persons
of all ages can receive specialized
t real men I not usually available ex-
cepl in the large cities.
Professor Stanley Burnham. f'h.-
D., associate ptxilessor of Physical
and Health Education at the Uni-
versity of Texas, will coordinate a
leant composed of a registered
physical therapist, an occupational
therapist, a corrective therapist,
and several students.
Bastrop County is ti c pilot area
-.elected by United Cerebral Palsy
and Dr. B niliatn. The towns ol
Basttop. SmiUiville. ami Elgin,
Texas, have donated the facilities
and staffs of their local hospitals
for Hie Therapy Program. Dr.
Dr. J. W Tlmmas, Smlthvllle, Tex-
as: and l>r R. M Morris, Elgin,
Texas, will evaluate and refer each
patient in his area to the Team.
The Therapy Team will not only
provide treatment but will also
serve as a teaching team, as the
staffs of the three hospitals in Bas-
trop County will attend and observe
the sessions.
Dr. Morris has |ioinled out that
tliis progiam will give small cities
the services of ,sp< cialisls not nor-
mally available. In addition to '
treating live disabled and the luindi- cUNTON L. BARTSCH. who
is presently serving a tour in Vict-
capped, the team will help local
physicians treat severe fooilmll in-
juries and other temporary dis-
abling conditions.
As the needs of each count.* arc
evaluated and fulfilled, the Uni-
versity i.f Texas therapy team will
proceed lo another county, and will
eventually encompass a ten-county
area lo provide continuous services
(joddard, Bastrop, Texas; 1 to these counties.
