SFA State College President Steen
Is Founder's Day Speaker
A noted historian and college presi-
dent who received his BA degree from
McMurry was speaker for the annual
Founder's Day dinner on April 4.
Dr. Ralph W. Steen, president of Step-
hen F. Austin State College, actually
spoke twice on that particular Tuesday.
He appeared in chapel at 9:30 in the
morning and spoke for the 7 p. m. dinner
in the evening.
Founder's Day at McMurry is usually
April 5, but the observance this year was
moved to April 4 because Tuesday is a
regular chapel day. It is set up to pay
homage each year to McMurry's founder
Dr. James W. Hunt, who was president
of the college for 11 years after its
opening in 1923.
Dr. Steen has written 15 books on
Texas and American history and govern-

ment, many of which are used as text-
books in the junior and senior high
schools of Texas. He has also published
about 75 articles in national journals. He
is former president of the Texas State
Historical Association and holds member-
ship in several other historical groups.
Dr. Steen was born in Clyde, Callahan
County. He graduated from Clyde High
School; from McMurry; and got his MA
and Ph.D. degrees from the University of
Texas. He was named president of Steph-
en F. Austin in 1958 after having served
23 years on the faculty of Texas A&M
University.
The Founder's Day celebration was
planned by the Executive Committee of
the Alumni Association; by Charles Hog-
sett, Jr., director of alumni relations; and
others on campus.
