Punch Drunk unleash pent-up sexual tension
Dallas' madcap sketch-comics invade WaterTower's Out of the Loop festival with lascivious new show
By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor
Just when you thought Janet Jackson had
pushed the envelope as far as it could go, a team
of naughty pranksters are forging ahead to the
new frontier of sexual liberation, F*unch Drunk
Comedy — the Dallas equivalent of Chicago's
Second City — are returning to WaterTower
Theater's annual Out of the Loop festival. And
this year, the funny foursome are taking no pris-
oners with their sexy, graphic and salacious
show, "Thus Spake Kama Sutra."
While that haughty-sounding title takes its
cues from Strauss and Nietzsche's "Thus Spake
Zarathustra," the Punch Drunks insist that their
new batch of skits is pure smut.
"We try to do stuff that's smart, so that you can
peel back a layer and see that there's an actual
study of human nature, but we're making sure
that it's filthy, too," says troupe member Duane
Jones.
On a comparative level, Jones says the show is
like "The Carroll Burnett Show" meets vulgar,
electro-clash chanteuse Peaches.
In homage to the fabulous choreography seen
on "Solid Gold," E'unch Drunk has enlisted a
crew of down-and-dirty shimmy freaks called
The Bad-Touch Dancers. And their skits will visit
various ribald themes, including suburban sexual
fetishes, the dying libido of lesbians in commit-
ted relationships and cruising for sex in the con-
dom aisle at the local pharmacy.
The idea for a risque revue arose organically.
J
The Drunks — Jones,
Rasa Hollender, Kelli
Elandis and Brendan
Ahern — have been
intimately working
together for almost
three years. "And
since we've been
together, there's been
a lot of bottled up sex-
ual tension," Jones
says.
This will be the sec-
ond year Punch Drunk
has participated in the
Out of the Loop festi-
val. Jones says he
attended the festival a
few years ago, "and
we were inspired by
the thought-provoking
and experimental
edge of the dance and
theater pieces. And
we thought that they'd
be open to some alternative comedy."
Apparently, WaterTower has encouraged them
to be fearless in their creative expression. In
doing so, the F*unch Drunks have familiarized
themselves with the legalities of theatrical decen-
cy.
HORNY FOURSOME: Punch Drunk Comedy troupe, clockwise from left, Brendan Ahern, Duane
Jones, Kelli Elandis and Rasa Hollender, are ready to get their freak on for some laughs.
"Well, you can't show the entire nipple," he
says. "And from what I understand, a man's
thong has to be a certain width."
March 6 and 13 at 10:30p.m. at WaterTower
Theatre, 15650 Addison Road, $10. 972-450-
6220.
