W for Victory
Dallas' splashy W Hotel — a mix of East Coast and Texas ideas — opens
By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer
EVERYBODY INTO THE POOL: Dallas' new W Hotel at Victory Park has a spa that might induce vertigo. It's located in an
open space on the 16th floor.
They say everything's bigger in Texas. And
from the outside of the W Hotel — Ross Perot
Jr. % signature structure in the Victory Park devel-
opment — it might look that way. But walk
inside, and the common areas, at least, seem
smallish: the streamlined spaces appear East
Coast urban more than Texas ranch.
That makes sense: The first of the W Hotels
opened in New York City in 1998, and quickly
followed with sites in Atlanta, San Francisco,
Honolulu and Los Angeles. No wonder some of
the residences in this property — the first W
hotel to offer permanent housing — can run at
half a million dollars for less than 1,000 square
feet of living space.
Still, the Dallas W, which officially opened
this week, does have its share of Lone Star touch-
es. The so-called Living Room is decorated in a
chic, cowboy-cool style. Bliss, the grand pool
and spa area — 16 floors up, and with breathtak-
ing vistas of the city — exudes elegance. And if
you have the money for a 5,000 square foot pent-
house (expect to pay upwards of $2 mil), they
have a floor plan and a view to die for.
And the "W" in the hotel's name stands for its
signature Whatever/Whenever service policy: If
you want it, they'll get it. That's a very Texas-like
approach to customer attention — Stanley
Marcus would be proud.
Prices are also as big as the Llano Estacado.
Basic rates for the 252 rooms start around $329 a
night. The WOW suite — there's just one in the
entire hotel — costs a full you-don't-want-to-
know price.
But you don't need to live at the W — or be
from out of town — to appreciate what W has to
offer. The Las Vegas-based Ghostbar has a pent-
house address (32 floors up) and a hip, clubby
atmosphere. Described as surrealistic lounge,
Ghostbar officialy opens to the public at 10 p.m.
on June 30, and musician Tommy Lee performs
on July 1.
Another destination for locals will be Craft,
chef Tom Colicchio's upscale but family-style
restaurant. Colicchio, most recently the lead
judge on Bravo's "Top Chef," specializes in fresh
ingredients on a rotating menu. And "fresh" may
be the best way to describe the W right now.
