of the most sought-after jokesmiths in the enter-
tainment industry, putting words in the mouths of
such performers as Bette Midler, Billy Crystal.
Lilly Tomlin and Robin Williams among others.
In the 1970s he wrote for variety shows like
the original "Donny and Marie" show and "The
Brady Bunch Hour." He started writing for the
annual Academy Awards show, collaborating
with Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg among oth-
ers, and became head writer for the program in
2000.
Vilanch's face became recognizable to many
after the 1999 documentary "Get Bruce," his
2000 show "Almost Famous" on Broadway and
his stint on Goldberg's reincarnation of
"Hollywood Squares."
In 2003, Vilanch played Edna Tumblad — the
role created in film by Devine and on Broadway
by Harvey Fierstein — in the first national tour
of "Hairspray."
The Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade is spon-
sored each year by the Dallas Tavern Guild, a
business organization including 22 GLBT night-
clubs.
This year's parade begins at 2 p.m. on Sept.
17, and Tavern Guild officials have chosen six
local health service agencies as beneficiaries.
The entry deadline is Aug. 11.
Late entries will be accepted with an added fee
of $100 through Aug. 18, but Tavern Guild offi-
cials said no entries will be accepted after that
date.
All organizations, individuals and businesses
planning to have an entry in the parade must send
a representative to a mandatory entrant meeting
on Aug. 26 at The Rose Room on Cedar Springs.
Those who do not attend will not be allowed to
participate in the meeting, and their entry fees
will not be refunded, officials said.
Officials also stressed that new additions have
been made to the parade rules, and urged all
entrants to read those rules carefully.

MILLER

"Like the chamber, Mayor Miller has been a
champion for both the GLBT community and the
business community," Forte said.
Miller has said the city's diversity is one of its
greatest assets: "We not only embrace it, but we
pride ourselves on it. The North Texas GLBT
Chamber of Commerce significantly contributes
to our goal of being a city that is diverse, vibrant
and progressive."
The chamber was founded in 2005. It provides
monthly networking and educational programs
and advertising opportunities.
