cerned about his sexual orientation. He tested so
well in other areas that the disadvantage about his
sexual orientation was offset, he said.
"I wanted the gay issue tested straight up,"
Oakley said, now in his third two-year term.
Oakley said he plans to campaign on his
record.
"It'll be what I've been about since I've been
there, which is to build the consensus and calm
the whirlwind that's been happening the last five
years/* he said.
There are at least eight contenders considering
a run for the mayor's job. They are magazine edi-
tor Zac Crain, banker Max Wells, lawyers Roger
Herrera and Darrell Jordan and City Council
members Gary Griffith, Don Hill, Mitchell
Rasansky and Oakley.
Herrera, who has a lower profile than most of
the other candidates, is also gay. He is a close
associate of local Latino politicians Domingo and
Elba Garcia.
Pat Cotton, a longtime local political consult-
ant, said she considers Oakley's chances of win-
ning a long shot, but she praised him for his abil-
ity and his commitment to the job. She supports
lawyer Darrell Jordan, and she will be working
on his campaign for mayor.
"Ed's a good friend," Cotton said. "He does
such a good job as defacto mayor, putting votes
together, getting people to work together and
cooperate. He's just very talented in that regard."
Oakley has been recognized for his work in
hammering out comprises among council mem-

Cotton said she believes that anyone who is a
current member of the council will have a diffi-
cult time getting elected. She said she believes
voters will be looking for a change when they go
to the polls in May 2007.
"I think they are looking for someone who is
pleasant to deal with and supportive of things that
are good for the city — somebody who will make
businesses feel it's ok to come here and won't get
screamed at for something," Cotton said.
Cotton said Dallas residents who follow the
City Council meetings are ready for the officials
to settle down, and that the "infighting and the
hostility between council members has just real-
ly gotten out of hand."
Mayor Laura Miller said in a telephone inter-
view that she does not see the disagreements that
arise in council meetings as a huge issue. That
will always be the case, no matter who is mayor,
she said.
"I think in a democracy you are always going
to have sensitive issues and people are going to
get upset or personal or nasty," Miller said.
Miller said Oakley was responsible for the
only disturbance at a recent council meeting
when he criticized Councilman Mitchell
Rasansky for questioning taxpayer support of a
project and voting against it.
Miller said as mayor she has never lost her
temper during a council meeting, and she feels
compelled at times to remind council members in
a nice way that they are being "over the top, per-
sonal and silly."
"I think it is just a matter of how you manage
the meeting," Miller said.
Oakley said he realizes that he may be coming
from behind to win the mayor's race. He noted
that in his first two campaigns for City Council
he was the underdog, but won by good margins.
"I will certainly be underestimated," Oakley
said. "It's going to be real interesting and a lot of
work. I'm a street fighter. That's where the battle
is going to be won — in the streets."
Oakley said the mayor's election would prob-
ably be the most expensive the city has ever seen,
and raising enough money to get his message out
will be a factor in whether he wins.
Oakley said his optimism is based in part on by
how many North Dallas residents are entering the
race for mayor. Of the eight possible contenders,
only Oakley, Hill and Herrera live south of the
Trinity River.
"If I pull my base together, which is the south-
ern sector and which is my strength I wind up in
a runoff with one of the five or six or seven or
eight in the north," Oakley said. "There will def-
initely be a runoff with this many candidates in
the race."
Oakley said he believes the results of the 2006
election, which saw Dallas County turn away
from the Republican Party and elect two gay can-
didates while embracing Democrats, shows that
Dallas voters have become more sophisticated.
"What it proves to me is the City of Dallas has
matured to the point they are beyond racial, gen-
der and sexual orientation lines," Oakley said.
"People want qualified people in positions.
Being gay, female, African-American or
Hispanic are not important — especially the gay
issue," he said.
