AIDS services groups lose patient meals program funding
Low-income HIV-positive patients who eat hot meals
at RCD, AIN could find the kitched closed in 2008
By John Wright Staff Writer
When he was diagnosed with HIV in
1988, doctors gave Iyron Butler six
years to live. Nineteen years later,
Butler is still going strong, and he gives
much of the credit to the Resource
Center of Dallas' hot lunch program.
"It's helped me survive, because
there were times that I couldn't cook or
was too ill to cook,"said the 54-year-old
Butler, who has been utilizing the pro-
gram for the last five years. "I could go

Law had banned adoptions
by out-of-state gays
Associated Press
OKLAHOMA CITY — The state
plans no further appeals of a court
decision that struck down a 2004 law
aimed at same-sex adoptive parents.
Earlier this month, the 10th Circuit
Court of Appeals affirmed a lower
court's ruling that a state law barring
the issuance of birth certificates to
Oklahoma children adopted by out-of-
state gay couples is unconstitutional.
"We hold that final adoption orders
by a state court of competent jurisdic-
tion are judgments that must be given
full faith and credit under the
Constitution by every other state in
the nation," the ruling said.
Tom Cross, the state Health
Department's deputy general counsel,
said Aug. 16 the agency could not-
meet the requirements to have the

to the meals program and get a quick
meal or get a box to go so I wouldn't go
hungry for a day."
Butler is one of hundreds of low-
income, HIV-positive clients who eat
each weekday at the Resource Center
or the AIDS Interfaith Network.
For many, it's often their only meal.
For others, it serves as a reminder to
take medication, which in some cases
can't be done without food. For still
others, it's a rare opportunity to meet
and socialize with those who can relate
to their problems. But the meals soon
may be going away.
Due to changes in federal guidelines,
Dallas County Health and Human
Services recently informed the
Resource Center and AIN that it won't
fund the programs after February.
The cuts —largely unexpected —
are part of an ongoing effort to comply
with changes under the Ryan White
Treatment Modernization Act of 2006,
passed by Congress in December.
Under the updated act,

Gay Madison County resident's car found burned
By David Webb Staff Writer
A search is under way for a missing
gay Madison County resident whom
investigators fear may have been a
victim of violence.
Jimmy Martin, 33, was last seen in
his hometown ofNormangee on Aug.

days later in Centerville, which is in
the neighboring county of Leon.

L.O.W. Riders travel Texas
f
Metroplex chapter of state-wide
motorcycle group to tour North
Texas on ride starting Sept. 2
By John Wright Staff Writer
A few years ago, Julie Dubois, Jill Havens
and others launched a Yahoo! Group for female
bikers in Dallas.
They decided to call it L.O.W. Riders,
although they say they're unsure whether the
acronym was intended to stand for "lesbians on
wheels" or "ladies on wheels" — or both.
"It was just an available name," Dubois said.
Little did they know, a more formal group

called L.O.W. Riders — for "ladies on wheels"
— already had been started in Austin.
And when members of the Austin group got
wind of the Dallas Yahoo! Group, they skip-
traced Dubois, obtaining her e-mail address
and phone number at work.
The two parties arranged a rendezvous in
Dallas, said Havens, who called the situation "a
little scary."
"All we knew was these were some bad-ass
biker chicks and they were coming to kick our
asses," Haven said.
As it turned out, that wasn't the case.
Members of the Austin group merely wanted to
