LGBT protests met with dissent
Collin County gay-rights group
isn't backing Cinemark rally in
latest case of strategic differences
By John Wright News Editor
PLANO — A gay-rights protest is planned
outside the Cinemark Legacy theaters in Piano
on Saturday Dec. 13, but the event doesn't
have the blessing of the local LGBT equality
group.
The Cinemark protest is the latest example
of internal differences about what the LGBT
community's strategy
should be in the wake of
Proposition 8, the consti-
tutional amendment ban-
ning same-sex marriage
in California.
Israel Luna, a gay inde-
pendent filmmaker from
Dallas, organized the
protest in response to
Cinemark CEO Alan
Stock's contribution of $9,999 to Yes on 8. The
"No 'Milk' for Cinemark" protest will take
place a day after the opening of "Milk" — a
film about murdered gay-rights activist
Harvey Mlk — at the Cinemark Legacy.

Illusions owner plans lawsuit to

By John Wright News Editor
The debate over a smoking ban in bars has
been billed as a battle between health advocates
concerned about the
impacts of secondhand

customers.

Iowa Supreme Court hears
arguments in marriage case
Ruling may take year or more; state would be 4th to legalize gay nups
By Amy Lorentzen Associated Press
DES MOINES, Iowa — The gay marriage
debate continued Tuesday, Dec. 9 as the Iowa
Supreme Court heard arguments in a challenge
to the state's same-sex marriage ban.
Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights
organization, filed the lawsuit in 2005 on behalf
of the six gay and lesbian Iowa couples who
were denied marriage licenses, as well as three
of the couples' children. It names former Polk
County recorder and registrar Timothy Brien.
Former Iowa Solicitor General Dennis
Johnson, an attorney for the plaintiffs, argued
that the state's same sex marriage ban, which
allows marriage only between a man and
woman, violates gay Iowans' constitutional
rights.

are suggesting that everybody be allowed to

Hate crimes bill possible in 2009, but ENDA, DADT may have to wait
By Lisa Keen Keen News Service
WASHINGTON, D.C. — There will be some
real gains for LGBT people under the adminis-
tration of President-elect Barack Obama. But
there are some real caveats, too.
"Things may happen later than we want and
in different packages than we expect," predicted
Elizabeth Birch, former president of the Human
Rights Campaign.
That prediction was echoed throughout last
weekend's Gay & Lesbian Leadership
Barack Obama
Conference in
Washington, D.C., by vari-
ous people among the
600-plus gathering of
LGBT elected officials and
leaders and in varying
contexts.
The consensus seemed
to be this:
