had belonged to some emigrants. The next morning they
met another family coming back from Texas with no
encouraging report of the place. But they also passed
the camps of persons who were also going west. One
family that they passed was named Clarke. The Clarkes
were keeping the Sabbath by resting. Soon however,
the Clarkes caught up with the Deatherages, and they
traveled together. Now they noticed fertile fields everywhere
and Negroes picking the cotton. There were beautiful
mansions and prosperity wherever they looked.
The road became congested with wagons of cotton headed
for Memphis.
In spite of rain on the twenty-seventh, they reached
the outskirts of Memphis, a place of which they had
heard much. About the experience of the twenty-eighth
Deatherage writes:
We left our encampment early and soon found ourselves
in the city of Memphis. This place reminds me verry much o)
Bunyan's description of the town of Vanity Fair, the town
was alive with cotton waggons and the bank of the river nearly
covered with their bales and it was difficult for us to pass
for the multitude. When we halted we were accosted on every
hand by merchants pointing out and recommending their
stores and peddlers of various articles consisting of bread, fruit,
rarities and toys and vanities and Jeweleries fancies
