in 1836 and fought in the battle of San Jacinto. In
January 1839, he received orders from Gen. Rusk to
continue in constant service along the frontier for
six months, so with a company of seventy-two men he
ranged from the Cross Timbers eastward to Lake
Soda. He was active and vigilant but unable to accomplish
much owing to his scanty supply of subsistence

Bayou, had two young sons killed during this time.
Capt. Stout erected a number of small stockades
which gave protection to the families of the settlers,
and he assisted at Coffee's station. His force was
disbanded in June of 1839. One reminder of the
service of Capt. Stout is Stout's spring, some eleven
miles southwest of the present Preston Bend, where
clear, cold water still flows from the rocks as it did
during the days when Capt. Stout and his rangers
made camp there.
Capt. John Emberson, who had resided near Red
River for twenty years, raised a company about a
month before the expiration of Capt. Stout's service,
and for five or six months ranged the frontier. This
company disbanded in September, 1839, and from
then until May, 1840, there was no organized force
operating, so that the Indians became very brazen in
their depredations.
On the 4th of July, 1839, troubles were forgotten
and the memories of whistling bullets and Indian yells
