for having allowed her soldiers to cross into the Chickasaw
nation.
During the years 1840 and 1841, the attacks by the
Indians, murdering the whites and stealing their
horses and cattle, continued. Frequent flights to
Warren for protection were made by the settlers.
Many of the settlers gave up the fight and either
moved east to the more populated districts, or returned
to their former homes. Coffee's Trading Post continued,
as did Old Warren, and among the families
refusing to leave was that of Daniel Dugan, living on
Choctaw Bayou.
In the summer of 1841, Daniel V. Dugan, son of
Daniel Dugan was to be married and decided to build
his own house, two miles west from that of his father.
He engaged William Kitchen to help him cut the logs
and the two young men took provisions and established
a camp on the new home site. Two days after they
left, Mr. Kitchen, the father of William, was up on
Choctaw creek and learned that a party of Indians
was headed towards the settlements. He hurried to
the camp in order to warn the boys, but arrived after
dark and could not find them. He decided they had
already returned to the settlement and went on to the
Dugan home. No one had heard from the two young
men, so the next morning a party was formed to search
for them. They found them where they had been
cutting trees for the new home; Kitchen had evident-
