On October 3, 1938 at 7:00 in the evening, Barbara Ann Ray, a beautiful, bouncy baby
girl was born to Mr. Algy Lee and Mrs. Cecile L. (Forney) Ray in San Antonio, Texas.
She left her earthly home 2:40 a.m. Wednesday morning, April 20, 2011; she now has a
building of God, a house not made with hands but eternal in the Heavens. Nicknamed
"Baby Ray" by her Aunt Babe, Barbara was the second born child and first daughter.
At birth, her parents were told, "You are going to have a musician in this family one
day." The Lord ordered her steps and Barbara became a talented musician. At the age
of five she began school at St. Peter Claver Academy and began playing the piano.
Shortly thereafter, she began her music studies under Mrs. Hughie Dorn and attended
Alamo Music School. Barbara was an accomplished musician with a tremendous musical
ability and she dedicated her talent to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
At the age of five, she was baptized by Rev. J.L. Taylor, and it was here that she began
her musical career. At eight years old, she served as the musician for Sunday School and
the Junior choir under the direction of Sis. J. L. Taylor. At age twelve, she was named
Choir Director for King Solomon Baptist Church. She also served as pianist for the
Junior Choir at Coliseum Park Baptist Church and volunteered her musical talents at
the Willow Park Christian Church. In her early twenties, Barbara served as musician at
New. Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where she remained for many years. Her final
assignment was Minister of Music at the New Union Missionary Baptist Church. In
addition to the aforementioned assignments, Barbara was the organizer of the Jackson
Singers, a musician in the Citywide Revival, a member of the Mt. Zion District
Association Music Department, and a musician for the Leslie Foster Community
Echoes.
Barbara was married to Harold Jackson Sr. and to this union four children were born:
Micah Jackson, Harold Jackson Jr., Rhonda Harris (Milton), and Andrea Jackson; they
all are sharing in celebrating her life today. Her mother, Cecile Ray, her sister,
Algereida Cherry (Allen) and her brother, Charles Ray (Rubye) all rejoice today for
being allowed to share their lives with her. Her eight loving grandchildren, Harold
Hardaway, LaToya Jackson, Mikeda Jackson, Antoine Jackson, Andrew Jackson,
Lomadra Jackson, Ashton Haynes, and Monique Jackson share special memories of
their "Memaw" and they will never forget her loving touch and the joys they received
from a loving grandmother. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and dear
friends join us today in thanking God for the productive and Christian life of our loved
one, Barbara Ann Jackson (Baby Ray).
Her father and one sister, Beverly Jewell (Ray) Armstrong preceded her in death.
To God be the glory, great things He has done.'
