Mr. Roberto Ornelas
Master of Ceremonies
John J. Herrera Roast
2030 Santa Rosa Street
Houston, Texas 77023
Dear Mr. Ornelas:
I had accepted an invitation to the "roasting" of attorney
John J. Herrera when it was scheduled for Tuesday,
September 23. However, when the date was changed to
September 13, 1980, previous commitments do not allow me
to be present.
I regret my inability to attend for, not only am I a great
admirer of attorney John J. Herrera, I am greatly indebted
to him. When the Mexican-Americans in Pearland boycotted
the segregated school and children were out of school for
about two years, John J. Herrera gave of his time, while he
was a law student, to come and teach us on Saturdays and
Sundays. Little did he know then that one of his chamacos,
who could not spell "Lincoln" and whom he bawled out publicly,
one day would become Archbishop of San Antonio.
John J. Herrera is deserving of the honor and the roasting.
Much he has done, and much he has done unnoticed. It is
good that IMAGE of Houston, together with many other people,
gather in order to express gratitude to a great man.
With personal best wishes, I am and pray to remain
Yours in the Lord,
? ^
Most Reverend P. F. Flores, D.D
Archbishop of San Antonio
