'BEST YARD AWARD'
The purpose of the Best Yard Award was to provide for those living in Wolters Village an
incentive to improve and maintain a more suitable and attractive place in which to live.
Awards were presented in each of four categories to first and second place winners. The
categories included general beautification and appearance of yard, lawn, shrubs and police of
yard. These contest were held during the months of July, August and September.
The first place winner paid only one-half month's rent for that month in which their yard
was awarded first place. Second place winner in each category received a 25 per cent reduction
in rent for the month in which their yard was presented the second place award.
Those eligible to participate were permanent party officers, student officers and civilians
of equivalent grade as well as permanent party enlisted and warrant officer candidates.
The rules for the contest had the following exceptions:
Employees of Wolters Village. Inc. and post housing persons were not eligible
A new occupant of a set of quarters had to be in the quarters 30 days to be eligible
to enter the contest.
First place winners were not eligible to compete for two consecutive months.
The judges were selected by the Center Commander each month. The judging was made
on an unannounced inspection made between the first and twentieth of each designated month.
A yard plaque was presented to each winner which would be displayed in the front yard
for one month. A picture of the winners was published in The Wolters Trumpet the following
Friday.
