PREFACE
This county records inventory was undertaken by undergraduate
history students at McMurry College as part of a
Seminar in Local History. The instructors believed that the
inventory would provide an opportunity for the students to
learn the scope and contents of county records and to appreciate
the wealth of historical information in those records.
The students engaged in some good-natured grumbling about
their numerous trips to Baird, but they nevertheless learned
a great deal. The instructors did too! While we are still
mystified by the abundant varieties of dockets, we certainly
have a greater appreciation for the work of county officials
and a greater understanding of how much "real-people history"
is contained in official documents. From brand records,
trial records and the dozens of others we gained something
of a sense of the development of one piece of Texas. And we
have contributed to further historical research by participating
in the survey project.
Students participating in the Callahan County survey were
Laura Benton, Phillip Brewer, Fred Grindle, George Simmons,
Robert Warren, Curtis Jones, James Clearwater, Nancy Hardwick,
Mary Laurel Hays, Thomas Mays, John Pettit, and Douglas
Wofford.
Without the gracious help of Callahan County officials
