PREFACE
In this Centennial Year it is especially fitting that an
inventory of the records of Lee County should be made available
to citizens of Lee County and to historicans, genealogists, and
other researchers throughout the State of Texas. The inventory
will call attention to the availability of the historically rich
materials in the courthouse. It is unlikely that many counties
in Texas have as many of their historical records as well preserved
as are those here. This indicates that many conscientious county
officials and employees have done their jobs well during the past
century. Hopefully, those who serve in the years ahead will strive
to equal the service of their predecessors.
Preparation of this inventory has been an interesting and
pleasant experience for me. It enabled me to renew acquaintances
first made during my youth in Giddings. While engaged in the
project I was reminded of the fact that I had served as County
Judge for one day during my senior year in high school. Several
of the county officials with whom we seniors worked that day are
still in office. The opportunity this project provided to visit
and work with them again is greatly appreciated. It gives me a
great deal of pleasure to be able to take this opportunity to
thank all of those county officials and employees who assisted
in the preparation of this inventory. Their patience in answering
a multitude of questions and allowing me to occupy their cramped
space during busy work days contributed substantially to the success
of the project. While the good people in the courthouse helped
immeasurably, any errors or ommissions in the inventory are entirely
mine.
