Justices of the peace have jurisdiction in criminal cases, concurrent
with the county courts, when the fine to be imposed does not exceed
$200. 44 They also have power to punish any party guilty of a contempt
by fine not to exceed $25, or by imprisonment not to exceed 1 day.45
Appellate Jurisdiction
Civil'
The district court has appellate jurisdiction and supervisory control
over the county commissioners court, but its appellate jurisdiction
over trial courts extends to probate matters only.4 The county court
has appellate jurisdiction in civil cases over which the justices of the
peace have original jurisdiction, when the judgment appealed from or the
amount in controversy exceeds $20, exclusive of costs.47
Generally, appeals in civil cases lie from the county and district
courts, when the amount in controversy or the judgment rendered exceeds
$100, exclusive of interest and costs, to the Court of Civil Appeals of
the supreme judicial district in which the county is situate.4' Under
the conditions and in the instances specified by constitutional and statutory
provisions, cases may be taken by writ of error from the Courts of
Civil Appeals to the Supreme Court. The jurisdiction of the Supreme
Court extends to questions of law only.49

Criminal
The county court has appellate jurisdiction in all criminal cases
of which justice courts and other inferior courts, such as corporation
courts, have original jurisdiction.50
Appeals in criminal cases originating in the district courts and in
the county courts lie to the Court of Criminal Appeals. Cases brought
to the county courts on appeal may be further appealed to the Court of
Criminal Appeals only if the fine imposed by the county court amounts to
$100 or more; otherwise the decision of the county court is final.51
