The Hemphill Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored its 2008 Coloring, Poster, and
Essay contest for Canadian and Baker Elementary School students. Eachyear members take
a trip to the school and talk with the students about conservation practices in order to educate
the children on the importance of conservation. The contest was held to aid students in the
understanding of the practices involved in conserving our natural resources. The theme of this
year's contest was "Backyard Conservation: One Yard at a Time." Kindergarten through 2nd
grade competed in the coloring contest; 3rd & 4th grades competed in the poster contest; 5th
grade competed in the essay contest. Honorable mention ribbons were given to each child who
participated in the contest, 1st through 6th place ribbons were awarded to the finalists in each
class. 1st place winners received a $100 savings bond and 2nd place a $50 savings bond.
