Education Success Story
'I do not know what my life
would have been if USAFI had
not existed but it is certainly
very probably that my formal
educational development would
never have begun.
So writes Dr. Elbert M. Byrd
Jr. an assistant professor at the
University of Maryland and an
Army veteran of WWII. He credits
the United States Armed Forces
Institute with setting him on the
road that led him into the pro
fession of teacher and author.
"The United States was still
Last WW II Dog
Hero Dies At 20
HOLLYWOOD Calif. (AFPS)—
Once he was tossed in the air by
Va bomb concussion. He took a
bullet in the tail and another in
the head. But Sarge survived
combat with the Marines on Guad
alcanal Saipan and Tarawa to
become one of the three most
decorated K-9 dogs of WWII.
Now age has done what enemy
bullets couldn't. Sarge died here
at the extraordinary canine age
of 20 years 1 month and 1 day
—equal to 140 years of human
life. He was the last surviving
dog hero of the war and the Ma
rine Corps League of California
gave him a burial with full mil
itary honors.
Sarge a German shepherd
was named Maj. on Luck-
ner HI before entering the
service. He had been bought
at the age of six months by
Army Sgt. Edward Piatt as a
gift for his wife. Then war
came and! the response of the
Piatt family was total.
"We all wanted to go to war
Mrs. Piatt recalls "my son my
husband myself. I worked for the
government too and I didn't want
Major to join the city pound.
So Major became a K-9 and
pulled sentry dog duty at a Camp
Shelby Miss. prison compound.
But more than three of his five
years of service were with the
2nd Marines in the South Pacific
as a message carrier and a fight
er. Sarge wore the stripes of a ser
geant on his K-9 uniform.
Returned to the Piatt family
after the war this four-footed
combat vet brought home the Sil
ver Star for bravery and the
Purple Heart with two clusters
for his battle wounds. He'd al
ready had a full life such as few
dogs know and he had years
ahead.
Says Mrs. Piatt sadly: "We
were inseparable. I've just lost
part of my life."

Teacher Got Started
With A USAFI Test
suffering the results of the
great depression when at the
age of 16 I enlisted in the
Army in 1940" says Dr.
Byrd "I had a lOth-grade edu
cation. Although I studied and
read voraciously it was not
until near the end of the war
that I became concerned
about the implications of my
lack of formal education."
His concern was deepened by
the fact that by that time he
was married and expected soon
to be a father. Determined to
equip himself for a civilian ca
reer Byrd asked the high school
he had attended what he could
do toward getting a diploma
I was told that I could take
the USAFI General Educational
Development tests and credit
would be granted in accordance
with the nature of my perform
ance" he recalls. "I took the
tests the scores were high and
my high school granted my diplo
ma forthwith."
Byrd remained in the Army
until 1951 takihg USAFI home
study courses and also a number
Qf correspondence courses from
other institutions. "The result
was" he says "that when I ma
triculated as a resident student
in college I entered with junior
standing.
"Consequently since I had
the maximum entitlement un
der the G. I. Bill of Bights
I received B. S. and M. A.
degrees and completed an ad
ditional year toward my Ph.D.
before the entitlemen was
exhausted."
Without the help of the G. I.
Bill Byrd says the pace of his
educational progress was some
what slowed for he had a full-
time job. "But the program was
my Ph.D. in June 1959.
Meanwhile I had taught poli
tical science courses at Johns
Hopkins University and govern
ment and politics since 1957 at
the University of Maryland where.

I am now assistant professor."
Dr. Byrd is also the author of
several magazine articles and two
books "'Treaties and Executive
Agreements in the United States"
and "The Judicial Process in
Maryland."
"So
you see" he concludes
'my thoughts often turn to US
AFI for it provided an op
portunity and a means to an ad
venture in education which I
probably otherwise would have
missed."

Welcome!
This is the look that started with Thunderbird
—sired the Galaxie—and quickly became the
styling success of the Sixties.
Many cars have tried to copy it. No car has
succeeded. Incomparably beautiful the 1961
Galaxie maintains its distinction—as originals
always do.
Styling is only part of Galaxie's distinction:
this is the car that's beautifully built to take
care of itself. The '61 Ford goes 30000 miles

A reunion of officers of two

were officers of the 5th Medium
Tank Battalion (Patton) and 2d
Medium Tank Battalion (Patton)
of the 37th Armor.
The get together was possible
due to the missions of the two
units. The 2d Med. Tk. Bn. 2d
Armored Division is engaged
in site support duties at North
Fort Hood while the 5th Med.
Tk. Bn. was undergoing their
their annual summer encamp
ment at the North Fort sate as
part of the 90th Inf. Div a USAR
unit.
Highlight of the occasion was
the presentation of a "Gunners
Certificate" to Brig. Gen. Robert
H. Travis ADC 90th Inf. Div. in
recognition of his firing of the 90
MM Gun M-48 tank recently dur
ing the 5th battalion's tank gun
nery program.
Toasts to the two units were
presented by Lt. Col. Charles H.
Brown CO 2nd Med. Tic. Bn.
and Maj. Clarence W. Hanson
commander of the 5th Med. Tk.
Bn.
The meeting was the first be
tween the two units of the 37th
Armor. The 5th MTB was rede
signated from the 737th Tank Bn.
in April 1959. Since that time the
battalion has held annually forty-
eight meetings a year in prepara
tion for their two week summer
encampment at North Fort Hood.
Home- stations of the unit are in
Laredo Corpus Christi Uvalde
and Boerne Texas.

ANOTHER BIG REASON BEHIND THE BIG BOOM IN FORD SALES:
Galaxie styling is inspiring more admiration
(and imitation) than any other car on the road!
cally. The muffler is built to last three times as
long as ordinary ones. The body is specially
treated to resist rust and corrosion. The finish
never needs waxing.
Wouldn't it make sense to STOP spending
money on an old car that can never do for you
what anew Ford can do?
SWAP right now while your Ford Dealer's
sales are booming—and the swapping is easier
than it's ever been before.
